Netanyahu speaks with Trump, vows to protect Israel's interests

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that he spoke with Donald Trump, saying that the US president believed US-Israeli military gains in Iran could be converted into a negotiated agreement that protects Israel's interests.

"President Trump believes there is a chance to leverage the tremendous achievements of the IDF and the US military in order to realise the war's objectives in an agreement - an agreement that will safeguard our vital interests," Netanyahu said in a video statement.

"We will protect our vital interests under any circumstances," he said, adding: "At the same time, we continue to strike both in Iran and in Lebanon."

Netanyahu reiterated that the ongoing strikes were "crushing the missile programme and the nuclear programme" of Iran and also "inflicting heavy damage on Hezbollah".

"Just a few days ago we eliminated two more (Iranian) nuclear scientists, and this is not the end," he said.

Israel should annex southern Lebanon: Minister

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich says the war against Hezbollah must end with a “fundamental change” that includes control of Lebanon up to the Litani River, roughly 30 kilometers north of the Israeli border.

“The Litani must be our new border with the state of Lebanon,” he told members of his Religious Zionism party on Monday, comparing it to boundaries Israel has set in Gaza and the Golan Heights.

US, Iran exchange ‘messages’ through mediators

Washington and Tehran exchanged the “messages” over the weekend through Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan, an Egyptian official said.

Struck site in Tehran used for directing Basij force: Israel army

The Israeli military announced it struck a site in Tehran on Monday belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and used for directing battalions of the Basij paramilitary force.

The hit came days after Israel announced it had "eliminated" the intelligence chief of the Basij in a strike that had also killed the force's top commander, Gholamreza Soleimani.

Israel has been targeting the Basij force as part of efforts to try to undermine the Iranian authorities' grip on power.

"As part of a wave of strikes that was completed a short while ago in the heart of Tehran, the Israeli Air Force... struck the IRGC's main security headquarters," a military statement said, referring to Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards.

It added that the headquarters was used by the IRGC "to synchronise unit activities and to conduct situational assessments. It was also responsible for directing the Basij Battalions."

Pakistan PM says held talks with Iranian

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said he spoke with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, and promised Islamabad's help in bringing peace to the region.

The pair have spoken several times in the last month, notably to exchange Ramadan and Eid greetings but also to reaffirm Pakistan's hope for an end to the conflict with the United States and Israel.

Sharif said he extended greetings to Pezeshkian for the Persian new year and they also discussed "the grave situation in the Gulf region and agreed on the urgent need for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy".

In a post on X, he said Pakistan was also committed to playing "a constructive role in advancing peace in the region".

UK sending air defence systems to Gulf: PM

Britain is sending short-range air defence systems to the Gulf to help counter Iranian missile attacks, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday.

"We're deploying short range air defence systems to Bahrain at speed," Starmer told a parliamentary committee, adding the UK was "doing the same with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia".

The UK is working with industry to "distribute air defence missiles to Gulf partners", which have faced waves of Iranian barrages in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes, and has embedded airspace specialists there, Starmer said.

Defence minister John Healey told parliament the country would be deploying its Rapid Sentry anti-drone system to Kuwait.

He called this a "battle-tested ground-based air defence missile system that has already proved highly effective for UK forces taking down drones in the region".

A British warship, HMS Dragon, has also arrived in the eastern Mediterranean to defend Cyprus, Healey said.

Trump says Iran ‘means business’ in peace talks

Speaking in Tennessee on Monday, Trump said his administration has been negotiating with Iran “for a long time” and said he believes a deal is close. He did not make clear who was involved in negotiations with Iran.

“They want peace,” Trump said. “They’ve agreed they will not have a nuclear weapon, you know, et cetera, et cetera, but we’ll see.”

Senior Iranian officials insist there have been no negotiations with the United States.

In his remarks, Trump said there’s a “very good chance” a deal will be reached this week. He credited his threat to blow up Iranian power plants.

The president said he ordered a pause on strikes for five days to work on a deal, “and then we’re going to see where that takes us.”

Another Iranian official denies negotiations with the US

The spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that there have been no talks with the U.S., according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

“Iran’s position on the Strait of Hormuz and the prerequisites for ending the war remains exactly as before,” IRNA quoted Esmail Baghaei as saying.

'I welcome' reported Iran-US talks: UK PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday he welcomed reported talks between the United States and Iran over the war in the Middle East.

"I welcome the talks reported between the US and Iran," Starmer told a parliamentary committee, adding the UK was "aware" discussions were happening. He talked late Sunday by telephone with US President Donald Trump, according to Downing Street.

Trump has said there are "major points of agreement" between the two sides, but Iran has denied that the talks are taking place.

Trump says 'regime change' underway in Iran

US President Donald Trump said Monday that "regime change" was effectively underway in Iran, while warning that if talks with Iranian figures contacted by the United States do not succeed then bombing will continue.

Trump made clear talks were not with Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei but with people he described as "very reasonable," while so many top officials had already been killed in the conflict that "there's automatically a regime change."

If talks fail, he told reporters, "we'll just keep bombing our little hearts out."

US, Iran talks have 'major points of agreement:' Trump

President Donald Trump said Monday that there are "major points of agreement" in US-Iran talks which he said must result in Tehran giving up its nuclear ambitions and enriched uranium stockpile.

Trump said the talks - which Iran denies are taking place - were being conducted with a "top person" but not the country's supreme leader.

"We've wiped out the leadership phase one, phase two, and largely phase three. But we're dealing with the man who I believe is the most respected and the leader," Trump told reporters. "We want no enrichment, but we also want the enriched uranium."

'Things are going very well' on Iran, says Trump

US President Donald Trump told AFP on Monday that "things are going very well" regarding Iran, shortly after announcing talks with Tehran and a five-day pause on targeting the Islamic republic's power plants.

Trump's abrupt shift on Iran came hours before the expiration of a two-day ultimatum under which he threatened to attack Iranian power plants if Tehran did not reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

"Things are going very well," Trump said in brief comments by telephone to AFP when asked about Iran, following his earlier Truth Social post on the negotiations that immediately sent oil prices tumbling.

In his post, Trump made the surprise announcement, backed by little detail, that diplomacy was underway. This came after he earlier shunned talks with Tehran in the fourth week of the joint US-Israeli military campaign.

On Sunday, however, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held telephone calls with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as well as his counterparts from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, and the European Union. Turkish officials also said he spoke with US officials as part of efforts to end the war, without providing further details.

UN headquarters in Lebanon struck by a projectile

The UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, said Monday that a building at its headquarters in the coastal town of Naqoura was struck by a projectile. The UN said it believes it “was fired by a non-state actor,” an apparent reference to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have fought at multiple points along the border since Israel launched a renewed ground incursion into southern Lebanon. The UNIFIL statement said that “over the past 48 hours, peacekeepers have recorded intense gunfire and explosions” in the Naqoura area, and “bullets, fragments, and shrapnel have hit buildings and open areas inside our headquarters. ... As a result, peacekeepers have been restricted to shelters to avoid injury.”

UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel said peacekeepers have also observed or heard ground combat around the villages of Khiam, Odaisseh, Mays al-Jabal, Markaba and Taybeh.

Russia to evacuate more personnel from Iran’s nuclear plant

The head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom said Monday it will evacuate more workers from Iran’s Russia-built nuclear power plant but will also keep some.

Last week, Likhachev reported a strike on the plant’s premises close to the working nuclear reactor, saying there was no damage or injuries. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia had urged the US to avoid hitting the plant, warning it could trigger “irreparable” consequences.

Millions in Africa, Asia hit by Iran war fallout, UN says

As Trump’s 48-hour deadline to bomb power-generation sites in Iran over the opening of the Strait of Hormuz approaches, there are several electrical sites that could be targets in the Islamic Republic.

Some 80% of all power generated in Iran is created at plants powered by natural gas.

Those plants have continued working, even after Israel last week bombed Iran’s South Pars offshore natural gas field in the Gulf.

Among the top natural gas plants are Damavand Power Plant, Shahid Salimi Neka Power Plant and Shahid Rajaee Power Plant – all around Iran’s capital, Tehran.
