After she left, the suspects instructed the merchant to wait while the oud was being transferred back into his original bags, claiming they would complete the transaction the next day.

Luxury oud replaced with ordinary wood

During this brief window, the suspects secretly replaced the luxury oud with ordinary wood before returning the bags to the merchant.

The following day, when the merchant attempted to contact them, all phone lines were switched off. Upon opening the bags, he discovered he had been deceived—the valuable oud had been completely replaced with wooden pieces.

Rapid investigation and arrests

The merchant immediately reported the incident to the Command and Control Centre. Trump has long argued that unpredictability can be an asset in negotiations, and whether by design or circumstance, his recent comments have left regional capitals trying to decipher Washington's next move.

Trump has alternated between signalling progress towards an agreement and threatening renewed military action, while Iran has insisted no final deal has yet been reached.

Major disagreements

The uncertainty comes as Washington and Tehran continue to negotiate a proposed memorandum of understanding aimed at turning the existing ceasefire into a broader settlement.

Trump cools optimism: Iran deal may be closer — and further away — than it seems

While both sides have signalled progress, major disagreements remain over the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian assets.

Trump said after Friday’s White House meeting that any agreement must meet his conditions, including guarantees that Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon. But Iranian officials pushed back against what they described as excessive US demands, insisting that no final agreement has yet been reached.

US-Iran talks: Will Trump accept Tehran’s 14-point deal as talks stall?

Lack of clarity

The lack of clarity has fuelled anxiety across a region still recovering from months of conflict that disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, sent energy prices soaring and raised fears of a wider confrontation involving the United States, Iran and Israel.

Although officials on both sides have signalled progress in recent weeks, significant differences remain. Iran said on Friday there was still “no final agreement” with Washington, while US officials have continued to stress that any deal must meet Trump’s conditions.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore on Saturday, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Trump remained committed to securing a deal that met American conditions, but stressed that Washington was prepared for renewed military action if necessary.

US forces ready

Hegseth also dismissed suggestions that the US military had depleted significant stockpiles during the conflict, saying American forces were "more than capable" and remained ready should fighting resume.

According to details reported by The New York Times, the proposed agreement would effectively transform the current ceasefire into a broader framework aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.

Under the proposal, Iran would lift its blockade of the strait, allowing oil and gas shipments to resume, while the United States and Israel would halt military operations. However, many of the most contentious issues would be postponed to later negotiations.

Among them is the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, which remains the central dispute between Tehran and Washington.

Trump said on Friday that Iran would have to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and allow the removal and destruction of its stockpiles of enriched uranium. Tehran has so far shown little willingness to accept such demands publicly.

The proposed framework has also faced criticism from hardliners on both sides.

Uncertainty

In the United States, some Iran hawks have argued that postponing decisions on Tehran’s nuclear programme risks allowing the issue to remain unresolved. In Iran, conservative figures have accused Washington of making excessive demands and attempting to portray the agreement as a US victory.

The uncertainty has left many ordinary Iranians sceptical about whether a deal would improve their lives.

“We know that even if there is one, we will not receive any benefits from it,” The New York Times quoted a 43-year-old engineer from northern Iran as saying, reflecting broader doubts over whether any agreement would translate into economic relief.

The stakes remain high. Iran is seeking access to billions of dollars in frozen assets and eventual sanctions relief, while the United States wants assurances that Tehran’s nuclear activities can no longer pose a threat.

Yet the biggest challenge may be trust.

Iranian officials have repeatedly argued that previous negotiations failed to protect the country from military action, while US officials insist that any agreement must include clear guarantees and verification measures.

For now, the proposed deal appears less like a final settlement and more like a framework for further talks, leaving regional governments, energy markets and investors waiting to see whether diplomacy can survive another round of competing demands.

As Washington and Tehran continue to exchange messages, the Middle East remains caught between hopes of de-escalation and fears that the conflict could yet reignite.

Arsenal vs PSG: Champions League holders chase history in Budapest final

<atom:author><atom:name>Gulf News Report</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2123543</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>football,arsenal,Champions League</media:keywords>

The trophy is displayed on the pitch prior to the UEFA Champions League final football match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Arsenal FC at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on May 30, 2026.

Paris Saint-Germain face Arsenal in the Champions League final on Saturday in Budapest, with the French champions aiming to defend their crown and the English side chasing a first-ever European title.

Get updated faster and for FREE: Download the Gulf News app now - simply click here.

Arsenal chase first European crown

Arsenal enter the final buoyed by their Premier League success, ending a 22-year title drought. Brent crude averaged around $103 per barrel through much of May, higher than April’s average of roughly $99.

That increase alone keeps upward pressure on UAE fuel prices, which are revised monthly based on global oil averages. At the same time, crude has started cooling from recent highs. Brent fell below the $100 mark last week to around $91 per barrel as of Friday on signs of progress in US-Iran talks.

That leaves June fuel pricing in an in-between phase. Oil is no longer surging the way it did in March and April, but prices are still high enough to prevent a meaningful drop at the pump.

In May, UAE petrol prices had already risen for a third consecutive month, with Super 98 at Dh3.66, Special 95 at Dh3.55, and E-Plus at Dh3.48 per litre. Petrol prices were up nearly 50% from February, when Super 98 cost Dh2.45 per litre.

For motorists, the serious price spikes seen since March likely mean June prices could either edge slightly higher or remain close to May levels, rather than delivering immediate relief.
Click here to view past 12 months UAE fuel rates
Why oil prices are still up

The main pressure point remains the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

Around 20% of global oil and fuel supplies pass through the strait, and shipping activity has yet to fully normalise following recent disruptions and naval restrictions in the region. Even though tensions have eased compared to March, markets remain cautious because supply flows are still constrained.

Oil prices have also become highly reactive to developments around a possible US-Iran agreement. Any sign of progress in negotiations has pushed crude lower, while renewed uncertainty quickly sends prices higher again.

This explains why oil has been swinging sharply within short periods instead of settling into a stable trend.

Is Strait of Hormuz now open? More oil, LNG tankers cross Gulf chokepoint

How this affects UAE fuel

The UAE follows a market-linked pricing system introduced in 2015, meaning local fuel prices closely track international oil movements with a one-month lag. That means:

April prices reflected March’s oil spike above $110–$120

May prices reflected elevated April averages

June prices will now reflect May’s still-high—but gradually cooling—oil market

In practical terms, motorists are unlikely to see another major surge similar to April. But because oil spent most of May above April’s average, the chances of a significant reduction also remain limited.

Petrol prices may stay broadly stable or rise slightly, while diesel could remain under pressure due to tighter global supply and shipping costs.

Why relief can take longer

Historically, UAE fuel prices rarely fall sharply immediately after a spike in crude oil. Instead, prices usually go through a stabilisation phase where markets slowly adjust before a clearer direction emerges.

Diesel prices often take longer to ease because global demand from logistics, transport, and industry remains strong even when crude starts falling. This suggests June could act as another transition month rather than the start of a major correction.

If oil stabilises below $100 for a sustained period and shipping flows through Hormuz improve further, more noticeable relief could appear later in the summer.

What motorists should watch

The next direction for fuel prices depends largely on three factors:

Whether Brent crude stays below or moves back above $100 per barrel

Material progress in US-Iran negotiations or preliminary deal

Shipping activity resumes further through the Strait of Hormuz

April reflected peak disruption in global energy markets. May showed signs of cooling. June will reveal whether oil markets are finally stabilising—or whether volatility still has room to run.

Make Gulf News your preferred news source on Google and stay ahead of the curve

Afghanistan truck overturns, 20 dead including 12 children

<atom:author><atom:name>AFP</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2118725</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Afghanistan</media:keywords>

A man carries an injured girl to a hospital for treatment after a truck carrying Afghan families overturned in Jalalabad on May 30, 2026.

A truck overturned in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing 20 people on board including 12 children, a provincial official told AFP, updating earlier figures.

Deadly traffic crashes are common in Afghanistan, due in part to poor roads after decades of conflict, dangerous driving and a lack of regulation.

The vehicle was carrying Afghan families returning from Pakistan, where they had been living, according to Abdul Malik Niazai, spokesperson for the governor of Laghman province.

Get updated faster and for FREE: Download the Gulf News app now - simply click here.

"Twenty people (have died) - five women, three men and 12 children," the spokesperson said, revising an earlier toll of 18 dead. "We have one, and we want the second one ... there has to be a platform to reach bigger destinations."

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was the first player in the squad to get his hands on the Premier League trophy, and he liked it.

Pentagon chief Hegseth outlines new US Indo-Pacific strategy at Singapore summit

<atom:author><atom:name>Lekshmy Pavithran</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2170753</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Donald Trump,China,America,US-Israel-Iran war</media:keywords>

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth speaks during a plenary session of the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore on May 30, 2026.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has outlined Washington’s strategic vision for the Indo-Pacific, emphasising stronger alliances, greater burden-sharing and a shift away from dependency on the United States.

Speaking at the International Institute for Strategic Studies Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore, Hegseth said the US is “charting a new course” for alliances and partnerships aimed at strengthening America while making allies more capable and the region more stable.

Get updated faster and for FREE: Download the Gulf News app now - simply click here.

‘True partnership’ and shift from dependency

Hegseth said the US approach would prioritise “true partnership” across the region, with allies expected to take on greater responsibility for their own defence.

“The era of the United States subsidising the defence of wealthy nations is over. disastrous defence of their Premier League title.

The Reds finished fifth in the table, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, despite spending a Premier League record of nearly GBP450 million ($605 million) on new players in one transfer window last year.

Outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is reportedly set to take over at Anfield after leading the Cherries into Europe for the first time in the club's history.

Get updated faster and for FREE: Download the Gulf News app now - simply click here.

Just over a year ago Slot was heralded as a hero after taking on the daunting role of succeeding Jurgen Klopp and leading Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his first season in charge.

But fans turned on the Dutchman this season after a series of lacklustre performances and poor results.

Liverpool lost 19 times in all competitions and a return of 60 Premier League points was their lowest since the 2015/16 season.

There was also sign of dressing room disharmony, most notably from Mohamed Salah on his way out of the club.

In an explosive social media post earlier this month, Salah called for a return to "heavy metal football", referring to Klopp's high energy style of play, in a perceived dig at Slot's more cautious approach.

That post was liked by multiple members of the Liverpool squad.

"I'm not surprised," former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard told TNT Sports. "I'm gutted for Arne Slot because in his first year, he did an incredible job.

"Taking the reins from the great Jurgen Klopp, that was a tough task and big shoes to fill. I think he did it seamlessly. It's very difficult to win the Premier League, and I know that more than most."

Despite their troubles, it had been reported that Slot would be handed a stay of execution after securing Champions League qualification.

'Different approach'

However, the club's owners, the American-based Fenway Sports Group, have succumbed to fan pressure to axe the former Feyenoord boss.

"The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team's trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction," the club said in a statement.

"That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

"Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield."

Liverpool added that "the process to appoint a successor is under way".

Many fans were keen for the return of Xabi Alonso to Anfield, but the club's former midfielder will instead take charge of Chelsea next season.

Iraola's stock is high after an 18-game unbeaten league run to finish the campaign in sixth, just three points behind Liverpool despite vastly inferior resources.

The Spaniard also worked together with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously held a similar role at Bournemouth.

Slot ultimately paid for failing to get a return on Liverpool's huge investment last summer.

British transfer record signing Alexander Isak was beset by fitness problems, while Florian Wirtz struggled with the transition to the Premier League after a GBP100 million move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Slot, though, also had to deal with emotional turmoil caused by the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in July.

Arne Slot says Liverpool are in "survival mode” following loss to PSG

Is Slot’s exit inevitable as Liverpool fans chant for Alonso?

Liverpool shocked by Wolves: Is Arne Slot under pressure?

Slot says Liverpool can still do 'special things' ahead of Arsenal clash
