Island

Satellite images have shown an apparent oil slick spreading off the coast of Iran's Kharg Island, a key oil export terminal for the Islamic republic.

It was not immediately clear what caused the apparent spill, which was off the island's west coast and appeared to cover more than 20 square miles (52 square kilometres), according to global monitor Orbital EOS.

A UK-based non-governmental organisation, the Conflict and Environment Observatory, told AFP that by Saturday the slick was "much reduced", and may have been caused by leaking oil infrastructure.

Kharg Island is at the heart of Iran's oil export industry, a lynchpin of its battered economy, and lies in the Gulf far north of the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

Pentagon shows Iranian tankers disabled in Hormuz clash

The US military said its forces disabled two Iranian-flagged oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman after a confrontation with Iranian forces near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was part of ongoing American blockade measures targeting Iran. The tankers, identified as M/T Sea Star III and M/T Sevda, were reportedly prevented from entering Iranian ports.

Putin offers to move, store Iran’s uranium again

"If everybody agrees to it, Iran can be fully confident that it will export these materials to a friendly country that has cooperated and will continue to cooperate on the peaceful atom, and it doesn't strive to weaponise it. We have never once said that there is any evidence about Iran's striving for nuclear weapons. And all other participants, in my view, also could be interested," he added.

Putin recalled previous initiatives to manage Iran's uranium program, including proposals to process uranium in joint ventures under international supervision, emphasising that all operations would be overseen by the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He added that Russia's offers remain on the table to ensure Iran's nuclear materials are handled safely and peacefully.

"Our offers are still on the table," Putin said.

Trump says considering troop relocation from Italy

US President Donald Trump told Italian media that he is "still considering" relocating troops from bases in Italy, adding that "Italy was not there when we needed it," local media reported.

Trump made the remarks in a phone interview, during which he refused to comment on Iran's response to a US peace proposal, which had been expected on Friday, according to the report by local newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Iran threatens US sites if its tankers are attacked

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards threatened to target US sites in the Middle East if its tankers come under fire, Iranian media reported, as Washington was left waiting for Tehran's response to its latest negotiating position.

"Any attack on Iranian tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy attack on one of the American centres in the region and enemy ships," the Guards said, a day after US strikes on two Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

US President Donald Trump had said on Friday he was expecting Iran's answer to Washington's latest proposal for a peace deal "supposedly tonight".

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard CorpsAny attack on Iranian tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy attack on one of the American centres in the region and enemy ships

But if Tehran sent Pakistani mediators a response, there was no public sign of it, and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reportedly questioned the reliability of US leadership.

"The recent escalation of tensions by American forces in the Persian Gulf and their numerous actions in violating the ceasefire have added to suspicions about the motivation and seriousness of the American side in the path of diplomacy," he said in a call with his Turkish counterpart, according to Iran's ISNA news agency.

Rubio meets Qatari PM as US awaits Iranian response

Top US diplomat Marco Rubio met Saturday with the leader of Mideast ally Qatar, the State Department said, highlighting the Gulf state's role as a key intermediary for Washington as it awaited Tehran's response on a peace proposal.

"The Secretary expressed appreciation for Qatar's partnership on a range of issues," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement on the meeting between Rubio and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is also Qatar's foreign minister.

"The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed US support for Qatar's defense, and the importance of continued close coordination to deter threats and promote stability and security across the Middle East."

At least 9 killed as Israel pounds Lebanon despite truce

Israel carried out strikes across Lebanon on Saturday, killing at least nine people in the south according to authorities, with raids also targeting a highway not far from Beirut outside of Hezbollah's traditional strongholds.

The fresh attacks were some of the most intense since the start of a three-week-old ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah that has done little to halt daily exchanges of fire, mostly in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah said Saturday that it had targeted troops in northern Israel with drones on at least two occasions in response to the continued strikes.

The Israeli military said "several" explosive drones were launched into Israeli territory, with one army reservist severely wounded and two others moderately injured in one of the attacks.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar discuss Iran–US ceasefire

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss regional developments and efforts to maintain stability.

According to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides discussed the latest situation in the region, particularly the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, along with ongoing efforts aimed at de-escalation and strengthening regional security.

In a post on X, the ministry said Qatar stressed the importance of all parties engaging with mediation efforts, warning that a lasting solution depends on dialogue and addressing the “root causes of the crisis.”

US‑Israel war on Iran: Recent developments

next generation of football talent in Dubai.

While football academies have become more common across the region in recent times, TFA’s approach remains unique.

In Gulf News’ new Dubai’s Local Game series, TFA founder Ali El Jishi explains the philosophy behind the academy, where game intelligence is prioritised from the very beginning.

“I came to Dubai in 2012 after finishing my playing career in England and when I saw the football scene here, I didn’t see enough pathways for young players,” explained Jishi.

“At the time there was around 50 football academies but the majority of them focused on just the junior football, very rarely did they focus on the more senior game.

“We decided to go the opposite direction, we started from Under-18s and worked our way down and it’s been very successful.”

TFA founder Ali El Jishi wanted to do things a little differently

Since its formation in 2016, TFA has grown from initially focusing on older age groups into a comprehensive football development programme catering to players aged three to 18.

Over the years, the academy has expanded its offering to provide tailored programmes for all age groups and abilities, creating a clear pathway for young players at every stage of their development.

“We operate football in 14 nurseries across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah where we select the players for our academy,” said Jishi.

“From this point they go into our Elite Boots programme which is for Under 5’s, then we have Tech Lab which is for Under 12’s, where we work only on technical football, then we go into the senior football.”

For a football academy to thrive, specialist coaching must sit at the heart of its philosophy.

Beyond technical ability, young players require guidance in tactical understanding, decision-making, physical development and mentality in order to reach their full potential.

TFA follow three clear principles for their coaching

Jishi went on to explain the three clear principles every coach must follow to be part of TFA.

He said: “For me there’s three criteria’s, the number one is you need to be a teacher, it's not all about football knowledge, you need to have the skills to teach a whole variety of players.

“Number two and very important for TFA is care, and then the third is of course football knowledge.”

Dubai is one of the world’s most diverse cities, bringing together people and cultures from across the globe, and at TFA that diversity is reflected throughout the academy.

Players from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds train together, creating an environment built on inclusion, respect and a shared passion for football.

Ali El Jishi founded TFA in 2016

Jishi goes on to say the recent challenging period in Dubai has highlighted just how deeply the expatriate community cares about the city, with many families continuing to invest in grassroots sport and community development despite difficult circumstances.

“These recent hard times shows you how everybody values Dubai, and it’s not just for the Emiratis,” he said.

“That diversity is why we love Dubai and one of the biggest things I love about TFA is even though I’m British, it’s never been a British academy, it’s a Dubai academy.”

TFA has a proven track record of developing top young talent, with several players going on to pursue careers in football and proudly represent the UAE at national level.

Their success is a reflection of the academy’s strong reputation within the local football scene and highlights TFA’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of players in the country.

Jayden Adetiba was a product of TFA

“We have one boy who was with us from Under-10 and he went on to play for Arsenal,” stated the founder.

“The technical director of the UAE national team asked me if we have any players that can play for the country and one of them was Jayden Adetiba.

“Jayden now plays for Ipswich, and he was nationalised and played in the last Under-17 World Cup for the UAE.”

Jishi went on to discuss where he believes TFA can continue to grow in the coming years, highlighting the rapid rise of girls’ football both in the UAE and across the wider region.

With increasing participation, greater visibility and more opportunities emerging within the women’s game, Jishi sees huge potential for TFA to further expand its programmes and create stronger pathways for young female players.

TFA also work with girls in the aim to boost the women's game in the region

“As simple as it sounds we want to just keep teaching people how to play football, and then of course there is girls.

“Some of our best players currently are girls, in everyone of our programmes you will see girls playing but we’d love to boost that participation and it’s something we have been working on.”

Global Village in Dubai has officially extended its season and will continue to remain open and fully operational for visitors until May 31, Gulf News can reveal. Come celebrate Eid Al Adha with Global Village is the new credo. It had re-opened on April 20th following regional uncertainty.

The extension, announced on the scheduled closing day today, comes as Global Village continues to draw strong footfall from residents and tourists looking for family-friendly entertainment in Dubai.

"Season 30 marks a significant milestone for Global Village, reflecting three decades of growth, evolution, and success. It has shown the strength of the destination, the dedication of our team and partners and the continued trust of our guests," said Fernando Eiroa, CEO, Dubai Holding Entertainment, in a statement.

In fact, the destination has doubled down on boosting visitor experiences with the launch of its limited-time Dh99 “Wonder Pass,” which gives guests unlimited access to Carnaval rides for an entire day.

Available online and at ticket counters, the pass includes access to more than 195 rides, games, and attractions spread across the park’s bustling Carnaval zone.

The move is part of a broader effort to keep the momentum going as the season enters its extended run.

Among the newest attractions this season are five fresh rides — Toronto Tornado, Cape Gliders, Rio Rocket, Desert Dashers, and York Bikes — designed for both adrenaline junkies and families with children.

For younger guests, the recently introduced “Little Wonderers” zone continues to be a major crowd-puller. The indoor play area features obstacle courses, climbing structures, and interactive experiences aimed at keeping children entertained for hours.

Operationally, Global Village has also maintained extended weekend timings, remaining open from 5pm to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, and until midnight on weekdays.

The attraction’s decision to extend operations reflects continued demand and confidence in its visitor experience strategy as Dubai’s outdoor entertainment season winds down.

The destination's new closing date until May 31 will give residents and tourists a chance to visit the popular entertainment and cultural venue.

Global Village in Dubai to stay open and fully operational: Extended hours, Dh99 wonder pass explained

Global Village returns in Dubai today: What to expect as the seasonal attraction reopens with rides and Dh25 tickets

Digital bomb: How ‘elite’ internet access deepened divisions in Iran amid rising anger

<atom:author><atom:name>Stephen N R</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2171005</atom:uri></atom:author>
Digital bomb: Elite internet deepens Iran divisions
<media:keywords>US-Israel-Iran war</media:keywords>

The restrictions, imposed after anti-government protests in January and tightened further following US-Israeli strikes on February 28, have become the longest nationwide internet shutdown recorded in a connected society. It feels like a punch to the gut.”

EU lists Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guards as terrorist organisation

Rise of Iran’s ‘internet elite’

At the centre of the controversy is Internet Pro — a restricted-access system launched earlier this year through the Mobile Communications Company of Iran (MCI), which is linked to entities close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The programme reportedly offers faster and less-filtered access to international websites for approved users including business owners, academics, scientists and selected professionals.

Iran’s internet blackout — by the numbers

70+ days: Length of Iran’s current internet shutdown, according to NetBlocks

$2.6 billion: Estimated economic losses from the blackout

1 million: Jobs Iranian officials say have already been lost

2 million: Additional indirect unemployment estimated by officials

3.5 million: Workers potentially affected by industrial contraction

318,000: Record resumes reportedly submitted in a single day on an Iranian job platform

80 million dollars: Estimated daily losses to Iran’s digital economy during shutdown

80-90%: Marketing channels some online businesses say they lost during blackout

134%: Smartphone penetration rate in Iran before restrictions intensified

Why it matters:

Analysts say the shutdown is not only disrupting communications but accelerating recession, layoffs and long-term damage to Iran’s private sector and digital economy.

Critics say it effectively restores the unrestricted internet once available to all Iranians — but only for a privileged minority.

Independent Iranian outlet Khabar Online warned the policy was creating “a digital elite” while ordinary citizens are left trapped behind heavy filtering, slow speeds and an expensive black-market VPN economy.

“The main issue is no longer just filtering or shutdowns,” lawyer Mohammad-Hamid Shahrivar told Shargh newspaper. “It is now about redefining the right to access the internet.”

Black market booms

As restrictions tightened, VPN prices surged sharply, adding to public anger in a country already struggling with inflation, sanctions and wartime disruption.

Human Rights Activists in Iran estimated the shutdown has already cost the economy about $1.8 billion over the past two months — a figure echoed by Iran’s Chamber of Commerce.

The newspaper Ettela’at warned the restrictions had created a “dire and complicated situation” for virtual businesses and online workers.

Many Iranians now spend significant portions of their income simply trying to reconnect to the outside world.

Some have turned to illegal Starlink satellite receivers smuggled into the country to bypass restrictions entirely, despite the risk of arrest and national security charges.

Others remain dependent on costly VPNs or heavily monitored domestic platforms backed by the state.

Deepening divisions inside Iran

The controversy has also exposed rare public divisions within Iran’s leadership.

Although the Supreme National Security Council reportedly approved the Internet Pro system, President Masoud Pezeshkian’s government has publicly distanced itself from the policy.

Pezeshkian’s office recently described unequal access to the global internet as unfair, while Communications Minister Sattar Hashemi insisted high-quality internet access was “every Iranian’s right”.

But hardline figures associated with Iran’s cyber control apparatus have defended the restrictions, arguing they are necessary to protect critical infrastructure from cyberattacks.

Public anger has meanwhile intensified over reports that privileged Internet Pro SIM cards are already appearing on the black market for profit.

Even some labour unions, lawyers’ groups and the Iranian Psychiatric Association have criticised the tiered system, warning it risks deepening feelings of injustice, marginalisation and social distrust.

At a time when Iran’s leadership is trying to project national unity against the US and Israel, the battle over internet access is instead exposing widening fractures inside Iranian society.

For many Iranians, the internet shutdown has become more than a censorship issue.

It is now a symbol of inequality itself.

Iran responds to US peace proposal as drones Washington's latest peace proposal on Sunday, after drones threatened several Gulf region targets and Tehran warned it would not hold back from retaliating against any new US strikes.

According to state broadcaster IRIB, Tehran's response, passed to Pakistani mediators, focuses on ending the war "on all fronts, especially Lebanon" -- where Israel has kept up its fight with Iran-backed Hezbollah -- as well as on "ensuring shipping security".

Get updated faster and for FREE: Download the Gulf News app now - simply click here.

US President Donald Trump had said he was expecting Iran's reply by Friday, but as the wait dragged on, the ceasefire in the Gulf came under increasing strain, including from Sunday's drone strikes, one of which hit and damaged a freighter sailing towards a port in Qatar.

The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of being behind another attack that targeted its territory in what would be, if confirmed, only the second alleged strike on a Gulf country since the start of the month-old truce.

"We will never bow down to the enemy, and if there is talk of dialogue or negotiation, it does not mean surrender or retreat," Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on X Sunday.

Tehran's military chief Ali Abdollahi, meanwhile, met the country's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei and received "new directives and guidance for the continuation of operations to confront the enemy", according to Iranian state television.

'Restraint over'

Qatar's defence ministry said a freighter arriving in the country's waters from Abu Dhabi was hit by a drone on Sunday off the port of Mesaieed.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre said the bulk carrier reported being struck by an unknown projectile.

"There was a small fire that has been extinguished, there are no casualties. There is no reported environmental impact," it said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Iran's Fars news agency reported that "the bulk carrier that was struck near the coast of Qatar was sailing under a US flag and belonged to the United States".

In a social media post on Sunday, the spokesman for the Iranian parliament's national security commission warned the United States: "Our restraint is over as of today."

"Any attack on our vessels will trigger a strong and decisive Iranian response against American ships and bases," Ebrahim Rezaei said.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards had threatened the day before to target US interests in the Middle East if its tankers came under fire -- as they did on Friday when a US fighter jet fired on and disabled two Iran-flagged vessels in the Gulf of Oman.

Drone strikes

Iran's neighbour Kuwait also reported an attempted attack.

"At dawn today, the armed forces detected a number of hostile drones in Kuwaiti airspace, which were dealt with in accordance with established procedures," the military posted.

<a spokesman Park Il told reporters that a South Korean cargo vessel had been hit on Monday and was damaged by fire before making its way to port in Dubai.

"On May 4, two unidentified aircraft Hormuz -- a vital route out of the Gulf for oil, gas and fertiliser, seeking to wield economic leverage over the United States and its allies.

The US Navy, meanwhile, is blockading Iran's ports, at times disabling or diverting ships heading to and from them.

Iran has set up a payment mechanism to extract tolls from shipping crossing the strait, but US officials have stressed it would be "unacceptable" for Tehran to control what had been an international waterway and the route of a fifth of the world's oil exports.

<a Hantaviruses found in Europe and Asia are known to cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which primarily affects the kidneys and blood vessels.

Human-to-human transmission

Human Hantavirus infection is primarily acquired through contact with the urine, faeces, or saliva of infected rodents or by touching contaminated surfaces.

WHO: Contact tracing underway as rare 'Andes' Hantavirus strain confirmed in cruise ship outbreak

Exposure typically occurs during activities such as cleaning buildings with rodent infestations, though it may also occur during routine activities in heavily infested areas.

Human cases are most commonly reported in rural settings, such as forests, fields, and farms, where rodents are present, and opportunities for exposure are greater.

A farewell to Bollywood romcoms: Have we lost the charm of Hum Tum and Jab We Met forever?

<atom:author><atom:name>Lakshana N Palat</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2171247</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords></media:keywords>

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met.

I was 13, and I spent the entirety of 2004 watching Hum Tum. It was the time of VCD’s, and so we played it everyday after school, till the CD gave out and got scratched.

The CD still exists on a dusty shelf in our house, surviving like an old, worn out relic for millennials and probably an object of historical fascination for upcoming generations, ‘How did this even work?’

Tired of today's Bollywood? 5 classic love stories that still spark pure joy: Hum Tum to Veer Zaara

Ironically, Hum Tum, reminds me of the time of old CDs. It’s almost symbolic of the romantic comedies that Bollywood had churned out in the early 2000s.

Those films were a normalcy back then. It's a luxury now.

Silly, goofy and fresh, the story was not a profound sermon on life and love: Two people become friends and fall in love slowly over the course of nine years. It was far from love at first sight—their initial meetings are marked by sharp dislike, and one of the rare early instances where Bollywood acknowledges that suddenly kissing a stranger doesn’t automatically translate into instant love or attraction. Rani’s slap to Saif was well-deserved.

And the payoff, seemed well-earned. Sorry, but Saif’s final admission, “What do I say, that I will love you more than Tommy the dog and our children,” still wields more power over most of the attempted love confessions in Bollywood today, if at all.

Where did that enjoyable silliness of Bollywood go?

To quote most of the wearied millennials, we really had it good. If it wasn’t Hum Tum, it was the chaos of Salaam Namaste, starring Saif and Preity Zinta, this time, experimenting with the idea of a live-in relationship, residing in an unrealistic duplex in Australia. Javed Jaafery was the landlord, and his 'eggzactly' is a part of regular lexicon for those who watched the film. And, the good news was when the story dragged, the songs lulled us back in.

Those were the days of My Dil Goes Mmm, where Bollywood made you believe that you walk down foreign streets singing and everyone will join you in tune.

And when we weren’t watching grand locales of New York and Paris, we were brought to the real heartland of Punjab in Jab We Met, where again, Bollywood had us convinced chattering to a sad passenger on a train would inevitably lead you to the love of your life. And of course, the train station becomes the not-so-subtle metaphor for making decisions in life.

But we bought into it. Maybe it was because we didn’t see them as actors; we saw them as the characters. There was a looseness to these films, a willingness to let actors simply exist in the story instead of constantly appearing larger, tougher or cooler than everyone around them. It was conviction, fun storytelling and music that did the rest.

Over the years, little bits and pieces of Bollywood romances kept falling away. Sometimes, it was the music that changed. Sometimes it was actors slowly stepping away from romance altogether.

Sometimes it was stories becoming louder, more self-important and overly polished. Each change seemed too small and insignificant to notice in the moment, until one day, it felt as though the genre had vanished altogether, replaced by thrillers, hyper-masculine spectacles and mind-numbing histrionics.

The violent hero became the new romantic ideal through films like Kabir Singh and Animal, where rage, control and emotional destruction were packaged as intensity. He was always redeemed, of course, but never before leaving behind a trail of wreckage that the film expected audiences to overlook in the name of love.

Sometimes the actors became too big, and the films began bowing to their stardom, sacrificing emotion and storytelling in the process.

There’s not much romance left in Bollywood, and so we should contend with adrenaline-pumping, loud and masculine Chaavas and Dhurandhars in the world. Softness, fun, the ability to be silly and enjoyable is rather difficult to find, these days.

This isn’t to say Bollywood hasn’t tried making romantic comedies again. Recently, I watched Do Deewane Seher Mein, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur. The acting was decent, and the film had all the right ingredients on paper, but something about it felt overly engineered, as though it was carefully assembled from a checklist of modern relationship problems rather than lived emotions. Even the conflicts felt synthetic, stretched out for drama when a simple conversation could have resolved them in minutes.

And the music, while pleasant enough, lacked the kind of emotional memory older Bollywood romances carried. Earlier, even 'flop' Bollywood films could be joked about, laughed at, or even discussed or ridiculed in fun. No one would forget the ending of Mujhse Dosti Karoge when Hrithik Roshan 'accidentally' knocked the sindoor on Rani Mukerjee's head in the climax.

We had fun, even when watching the outlandish ones. But the idea of 'bad' and 'flop' films has changed too. We don't want to remember the bad ones now.

Now, romance often seems to rely on emotional extremities instead.

Saiyaara sparked all the buzz last year, crossing over Rs 500 crore, and to be fair, the acting was decent and the music was strong too, after what seemed like ages. Bollywood really wanted us to believe in unconditional love, except, it chose the route of conflating Alzheimers, PTSD with romance in a frenzied, contrived manner.

Maybe we just have to accept that Bollywood romances now exist like scratched CDs on dusty shelves. You will take them down, look at it fondly and remember how good you had it.

How BTS and Mexico wrote a new chapter in musical history: Tearful fans, deafening sing-alongs and ARMY power

'What kind of woman is this?'
