Sharjah: A fire broke out in a cargo ship docked at Khalid Port on Wednesday morning.

“The fire broke out on board the ship at around 8am, soon after it was loaded at the port,” a Civil Defence official said.

Sharjah Police said the operations control room immediately dispatched a team from Civil Defence and notified the Coast Guard, who reached the scene to rescue the crew members on board the vessel.

Three teams from Semnan and Muweilah and the headquarters rushed to the site. Boats equipped with water pumps were also sent. The fire was extinguished within minutes. Smoke enveloped the area as the Civil Defence team battled to save the burning cargo. There were no casualties.

The fire brought traffic to a standstill as motorists and pedestrians stopped to look.
