Socotra: Yemeni officials and residents of Socotra expressed their happiness regarding news that a UAE plane carrying relief aid was sent to help them on Sunday by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation (KBZF).

The plane carried 75 tonnes of food and medical aid, as per the orders of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

A source from the foundation said that the aid is divided into 60 tonnes of food aid and 15 tonnes of medical aid, which will be distributed to people in Yemen who are suffering from a shortage of foodstuff due to current conditions in the country.

The plane was received on its arrival in Yemen by Saeed Salem Bahgaibah, Governor of Socotra, and Dr Ali Saeed Al Makheeni, director of the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital in Yemen.

In a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM), Bahgaibah expressed his heartfelt thanks to the UAE leadership, government and people and praised efforts of the UAE leadership in providing assistance and driving efforts towards steps that support humanitarian work in Yemen. He added that such steps contribute to achieving endeavours to achieve peace and development.

Salem Daheq, director of Hadibo area, said that Shaikh Khalifa is a role model for humanitarian and charitable work on a global level. He said that Shaikh Khalifa’s generosity extends past the UAE to reach needy people across the world. Daheq said that Shaikh Khalifa’s initiatives strengthen humanitarian principles by providing aid to needy countries, particularly in light of current events in Yemen that resulted in the suffering of the people.

Al Makheeni hailed the aid given to charitable projects in Yemen and said that the aid will help serve a large segment of residents in Socotra and neighbouring areas. Regarding the 15 tonnes of medical aid provided for the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital, Al Makheeni praised the UAE’s contributions in the field of health, and said that the Yemeni government and people will be grateful for such massive contributions and support.

A source in the foundation reiterated that KBZF provides assistance in line with the international efforts exerted to alleviate the suffering of the Yemenis. He also indicated that the aid is in line with the wise leadership’s approach aimed to support the needy and in light of the UAE’s strategy and policy to provide humanitarian assistance to people across the world.
