Dubai: A Romanian woman will be jailed and deported for having sex on a yacht and taking abortion pills to get rid of a foetus.
The Romanian woman met the unidentified man, also believed to be Romanian, on a fancy yacht at Dubai Marina and they sailed off on a cruise during which they had consensual sex last year.
Shortly after, the woman realised that the man had impregnated her without them being married.
It is believed that the man fled the country once he learnt about the pregnancy.
The woman then purchased some medical pills and took them in order to get rid of that unwanted baby.
Instantly after taking those pills, according to records, the woman suffered bleeding that forced her to go a hospital in Dubai.
Emergency doctors who attended the Romanian woman realised that the abortion pills had caused the bleeding.
Upon failing to prove that her pregnancy was legitimate, the hospital’s management reported to the police about a suspected case of forceful abortion, an act that is prohibited in the UAE and is incriminated as well.
Upon being interrogated by the police, the Romanian woman confessed that she had conceived following the sexual encounter on the yacht.
When asked about the man, who had impregnated her, the woman replied that he had left Dubai.
She also said she took medical pills to get rid of her pregnancy.
Prosecutor charged the Romanian with having consensual sex and taking medical pills to have an abortion.
When she appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court the defendant retracted her confession and contended that she never had consensual sexual in Dubai.
She maintained before the primary court that she had sex outside the UAE and asked the presiding judge to dismiss her case for jurisdictional purposes.
The Misdemeanours Court jailed the Romanian for three months over the consensual sex charge and an additional month over the abortion. She was also ordered to be deported.
The defendant appealed the primary judgement before the Appeal Court, renewed her not guilty plea, and asked to have her imprisonment overturned.
Citing grounds of leniency, the appeal court reduced the three months jail term to one month and fined her Dh2,000 for the abortion
The defendant had contended in court that she had sex with her partner in Romania.
The Romanian accused went for a second and last appeal before the Cassation Court that upheld the one-month imprisonment and the fine. The deportation order was also upheld.
