Dubai: Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t the future, it is the present. People have woken up to the many benefits that AI has to offer, especially in the field of education. We have already witnessed the rise of education technology in today’s classrooms especially through a host of adaptive learning platforms. With virtual reality (VR) making inroads at a rapid pace and coding being taught to children, we see that educators are embracing technological advancements as an integral part of the teaching system just like chalk and blackboards. It is not the simple matter of whiteboards in place of blackboards or the obsolescence of textbooks. From kindergarten to graduate school, one of the best ways AI will impact education is through the application of greater levels of individualised learning.

AI essentially studies its environment to adapt to it at a rate faster than humans, this could be helpful in making learning more individualised. Students in each class have different IQs but still have to learn with pace of the class. AI allows us to create tailormade digital learning systems which will help students learn at their own pace. It will allow students to explore, experience or be involved in a subject as if they are actually present in that environment or place, which is such remarkable learning experience.

AI systems have started to change how we find and use information in schools and academia. Smart data collected by educational institutions is already a mainstream concept with educators employing data mining to ascertain how and why a course is chosen to a student’s pattern of decisions during the course. AI steps in to provide a more real time response to make feedback a part of the student’s interaction with the system. Moreover, AI’s virtual presence will be very different from the present mode of digitised textbooks and online tests creating a simulated learning environment where virtual tutors will ‘conduct’ classes.

However, no machine can replace human teachers. It can save them from crumbling under pressure. The role of teachers under AI would undergo a massive change with many suggesting that teachers would assist AI tutors in lessons in the future. But certain aspects like creative thinking, problem solving will still be the forte of teachers. AI has already proven to provide a more efficient and effective grading system and soon, will be able to provide lessons anytime, anywhere.
