Manama: Bahrain’s interior minister has called for an amendment of the penal law to hold parents responsible for the illegal acts by their minor sons or daughters.

Under the proposal, the parents will have to pay for all the damages caused by their sons or daughters to public or private property.

The legal proposal also called for involving young lawbreakers in national and educational activities, Shaikh Rashid Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa said at a meeting with a delegation from the two chambers of the bicameral parliament.

The minister explained the security situation in the country following the death of 19-year-old security guard Imran Ahmad in a homemade bomb explosion at around 1am on Friday in Al Eker, a village south of the capital Manama. A second security man was critically wounded during the routine patrol.

Reports said that seven Bahrainis have been detained in connection with the attack and have been referred to the Public Prosecution.

Imran was able to dodge a petrol bomb attack successfully, but then was fatally injured by an improvised explosive device (IED), authorities said.

The Director-General of the Central Governorate Police on Sunday said that the security measures put in place in Al Eker in the form of checkpoints at the entrances of the area were aimed at verifying the identity of those entering and leaving the village, a statement from the Information Affairs Authority (IAA) said.

Bahrain has been rocked by a series of clashes following the events that hit the country in February and March 2011.
