SHARJAH More than 5,000 people are expected to throng the premises of Skyline University College in Sharjah on February 5 in a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest sequence of yoga waves anywhere in the world.

Called Yogathan, the public event will see students and staff of the college line up alongside UAE residents from all walks of life in a bid to create ‘Mexican waves’ while engaging in a series of yoga postures. Indian playback singer KJ Yesudas and Guinness World Records adjudicators will be among those present. “The idea is to make people aware of the benefits of yoga and inculcate its practice in the modern times,” said Nitin Anand, director of Skyline University College, Sharjah. “We have been routinely making efforts to educate people on living healthy and staying away from alcohol, drugs and tobacco. I hope this event will serve the purpose of spreading awareness about the health benefits of yoga,” he added.

Walkathon

Held under the patronage of the Consulate General of India, Dubai and supported by the Indian Association of Sharjah, the event will be followed by ‘Swatantara (Independent) Walkathon’. The event is open to those over 10 years of age and starts at 7am at the college campus. The largest yoga lesson ever involved 35,985 participants at an event organised by the Government of India on the occasion of the first International Day of Yoga in New Delhi on June 21 last year.
