Dubai: One of the oldest parks in Dubai is undergoing a transformation. Satwa Reservoir Park will become the first solar-powered park in Dubai by the end of this year.

Set to open to the public within nine months, municipal officials on Sunday announced that 20 per cent of the project has been completed and. once operational, the park will rely entirely on solar energy without using the public electricity connection to operate its lights and integrated irrigation network.

“Dubai’s parks are the most important and busiest places in the country, in terms of the number of visitors and events organised by various community groups on special occasions, such as holidays and celebrations,” said Taleb Abdul Karim Julfar, Director of Public Parks and Horticulture Department at Dubai Municipality.

The park covers an area of 1.5 hectares, and the 40-metre high water reservoir tank and many of its basic facilities will be maintained.

“The park was built in 1980 in Satwa and was a landmark in the emirate, mainly due to the water reservoir tower in the area. Dubai Municipality decided to rebuild this park and make it the first park in the emirate that relies on solar power,” said Julfar.

There are currently 103 public places in Dubai, including six major parks, two open beaches, four pond parks, 33 residential parks and 58 public squares, in addition to a number of parks under construction.
