Dubai: A woman, who works with a catering company at the airport, has been accused of stealing a wristwatch worth Dh25,000 that a passenger had forgotten in the business class.

The Emirati passenger was said to have forgotten his wristwatch near his seat at the aeroplane’s business class when the 23-year-old Nepalese woman found it and kept it in her pocket in April.

At the time when she had finished her shift, according to records, security guards at the Dubai International Airport found the valuable watch hidden inside a box of gloves.

When the guard asked the woman about the watch, she claimed to him that she had brought it with her from home.

Not believing her reply, the guard called in the police officers present at the airport before the 23-year-old admitted that she found it on one of the planes.

Prosecutors accused the Nepalese woman of stealing the wristwatch.

The woman entered a guilty plea when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.

The Emirati passenger claimed to prosecutors that he had just flown in back from Europe at 6.30am when he forgot behind his wristwatch.

“When I reached home, I realised that I had forgotten my Dh25,000 silver watch. I emailed the national carrier and told them about the watch,” he testified to prosecutors.

The Nepalese suspect was quoted as telling prosecutors that she kept the watch in her pocket after she found it in the business class.

She was also cited as admitting to prosecutor that the airport’s security guards found the wristwatch hidden in the box of gloves where she had placed it as she tried to take it home.

A ruling will be heard on May 15.
