Dubai: 278,000 community members from all walks of life transformed Sheikh Zayed Road into the world’s largest and most iconic running track by participating in a record edition of Dubai Run today morning.

The event, led by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, was a celebration of health and well-being.

"278,000 runners. Thank you Dubai for making a lifetime of memories," Sheikh Hamdan posted on his X account, sharing a video of the Run.  The tally represents a 23 per cent increase from last year’s edition.

Sheikh Hamdan said: "Dubai Run is a testament to the power of community and the determination of the people of the city to lead healthier and more active lives. Today’s event reflects the city’s energy, its relentless pursuit of excellence, and the community’s awareness of the importance of sports and fitness. The remarkable response to this event also highlights Dubai’s emergence as one of the world’s most active cities and a global leader in fostering a lifestyle centred on wellbeing."

He added: "We thank everyone who participated in this challenge and contributed to its remarkable success. Together, we are building a healthier, happier, and more connected society while setting an example for future generations. Events like Dubai Run reaffirm our commitment to enhancing the city’s quality of life and ensuring Dubai remains the world’s best city to visit and live in."

Held as part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, the city came alive with energy as participants woke up early for one of the year’s most anticipated events. Runners lined up near the Museum of the Future for the 5km and 10km races. Among the inspiring sights were people of determination, individuals with other disabilities, fitness groups, associations, friends and families, young and old, united in creating lasting memories.

Alister Rebello, along with his friends, travelled from Ras Al Khaimah, leaving his home just after midnight. “This is an annual celebration of health that we can’t afford to miss,” he said, before joining the group of enthusiasts at the starting line.

Brief road closures and a strong police presence, including officers on horseback, ensured a smooth and safe event. In the surrounding areas of Downtown Dubai, families set out early, some with children in strollers, while many others took the metro, which began operating before 3am.

“We’ve been participating for several years as part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge,” said Kevin Lobo, a resident. “It’s important for children to be part of this event so they can carry the message of fitness and well-being to the next generation.”

As the race got underway with cheers and claps, paragliders with neon lights soared above the runners, adding a breathtaking spectacle to the festivities. Each glide through the air was met with awe from the crowd.

“Look, Daddy. It’s like birds,” a young girl shouted, pointing to the paragliders. In their final act, the paragliders left stunning trails forming the UAE’s national flag.

In a carnival atmosphere, music echoed through the streets. While some participants aimed to beat their personal records, others walked together in groups. But for most, it was simply an ‘I was there’ moment.

Saeed Hareb, Secretary-General of Dubai Sports Council, said: “Now in its sixth edition, Dubai Run, presented by Mai Dubai, has become one of the most important fitness moments in our city’s calendar, uniting community members of all ages, abilities and nationalities to engage in physical activities under one goal – the pursuit of a healthier and more active life. This year, we were proud to see new participants, families, and seasoned athletes alike, all contributing to Dubai’s growing status as one of the world’s most active cities.”

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said: “Dubai Run, presented by Mai Dubai, is a powerful testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a culture of health and wellbeing. This year’s impressive increase in participant numbers highlights the growing success of Dubai Run and serves as a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together as a community with a shared purpose. It’s more than just a run; it’s an opportunity for everyone - regardless of age or fitness level - to unite in celebration of personal achievement and collective progress.”
