Dubai: People felt light summer conditions on Thursday when mercury shot up to 30 degree Celsius during the daytime in some areas.

Describing it as an unexpected weather change, many people attributed it to global warming. Weathermen, however, reported nothing unusual, saying such conditions happen during a dry spell when winds blow from the south-east direction.

January and February are the year’s coolest months with occasional thunder and rain in the Emirates. The first half of the month, however, has gone dry and hot winds are coming from the desert located in the south east of the country, said a weatherman.

The conditions were slightly uncomfortable during the daytime in coastal and internal areas with high humidity and temperature rising to 28 to 30 degree Celsius. The conditions were partly cloudy in general.

The maximum high temperature was recorded at 30 degree Celsius in Al Ain, followed by 29 and 28 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Fujairah was the coolest city in the emirates where people enjoyed pleasant weather with occasional cloudy weather.

Cloud amount increased at times over some areas, especially the coast and weathermen predicted it would be rather cold to very cold by night in some internal and mountainous areas.

Winds were blowing at moderate speed and the see was also little rough. "The relative humidity is likely to increase on Thursday night and Friday early morning over some coastal and internal areas, said forecaster at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS).

He said conditions will remain partly cloudy to cloudy at times especially over coastal areas on Friday and Saturday. It will be moderate to pleasant during the daytime and rather cold by night and cold over some internal and mountainous areas. Winds will continue to be light to moderate, freshening at times. Sea will be slight to moderately rough that might become rough at times by evening.

The weathermen also warn people to take warmer cloths before going to outdoor activities during the weekend holidays. "We are currently having contrasting day and night conditions and it could be very cold in open and desert areas at night," he said.
