Sharjah: At least one person died and another suffered serious injuries after a crane collapsed on them at a construction site in Sharjah on Saturday evening, an official told Gulf News.
The Sharjah Police detained a number of managers of the construction firm after the accident that took place in Al Nahda area of Sharjah.
At 10.10pm police official told Gulf News that rescue forces were still at the site and were working to extract the body out.
Several employees who were present at the site were summoned by the police for questioning to piece together the moments leading to the tragic workplace accident.
The police operations room received a call around 5.30pm saying that some Asian workers were stuck after the crane collapsed on them.
Police patrols, paramedics and Civil Defence rescue unit moved to the spot and shifted the injured worker to a hospital.
Major Hani, Director of Media Section at Sharjah Civil Defence, said the fire fighters were called to the scene to remove the wreckage of the collapsed crane and to pull out the trapped worker.
Police are urging the engineers and construction workers to ensure that all safety procedures are in place at their worksites in order to avoid similar accidents.
