Dubai: A back-to-school traffic safety campaign has been launched by Dubai Police’s Traffic Department.

The campaign aims to improve awareness of traffic safety among schoolchildren, especially primary school pupils, a senior police official said.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police Traffic Department, said on Wednesday that the department’s back-to-school safety programme includes lectures and exhibitions as well as posters being displayed in schools.

“Improving communication with schools and teachers is one of the most effective methods to discover defects and tackle shortcomings, and the best way to draw up future policies and select the subjects of awareness campaigns,” said Major General Al Zafein.

He talked to students and gave them directions on how to cross the road safely and how to get on and off school buses and out of cars safely. He urged them to become traffic safety ambassadors and to set a good example among their peers.

He praised educational bodies who cooperated with the department to spread awareness among students and other people such as parents, bus drivers and supervisors.

The campaign, which is launched at the beginning of every academic year and lasts until schools close, aims to curb traffic accidents that take place as a result of heavy traffic in school areas, said Major General Al Zafein.
