Dubai: Companies and institutions who implemented sustainable transport projects and ideas were honoured yesterday by Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, at the Dubai Awards for Sustainable Transport 2013.
The fifth edition of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) award, which was held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, aims at encouraging institutions to come up with creative ways to implement and promote sustainable transport.
During the ceremony the Mayor of Seoul, Park Won Sun, spoke about his city’s progress from a war zone during the Korean War to one of the world’s leading countries in sustainable transport in the world.
Since its inception in 2008 the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transportation has attracted more and more participants and expanded to include more categories.
According to the Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, the number of categories has increased from three in the first edition to seven in the fifth edition. The number of applicants for the award from different emirates has also increased rapidly from 28 in 2008 to 89 in 2012.
This year’s award had five main categories and the first prize in the category Mobility Management was awarded to Masdar Company. STS School transport Services LLC won first prize in the Transport Safety category. The first prize in the third category, Environmental Protection, went to Emirates Gas. First prize for the “Disabled” category went to Emirates Transport and the winner of the fifth category, School transportation, was awarded to STS transport Services LLC.
The award also included Special Awards categories, Media Coverage and Academic Research, where institutions were awarded for contributing to sustainable transport. The winners of the categories were abudhabienv.ae and UAE University respectively.
