Two men have each been jailed for a year for selling more than 120,000 CDs and DVDs loaded with pirated Hollywood and Bollywood movies, as well as 450 CDs containing pornographic material.

The two Chinese men, identified as S.P., 31, and W.Z., 46, will be deported after serving their prison terms.

A few weeks ago an informant alerted Dubai police that the accused were selling pirated CDs and DVDs in a shop in Naif. The police put the two men under observation.

They arrested them when they saw them loading 10 boxes of pirated CDs and DVDs into a cab. The police then raided the shop where the rest of the items were being kept.

S.P. and W.Z. had kept the DVDs and CDs inside boxes and bags. The police confiscated all the pirated material.

In their statement, the men claimed that they were just delivering the items to a Chinese man, whom they did not know. They said they were to be paid Dh100 for the job.

The Dubai Court of First Instance also fined the men Dh50,000 each.

In a similar case, a Chinese man, identified as L.K., was also fined Dh50,000 and given a six-month prison term for selling 119 pirated CDs and DVDs, some of which were loaded with pornographic material.

The man will be deported after serving his jail term. The 41-year-old was arrested travelling in a taxi with the counterfeit CDs and DVDs.
