I have been residing in a building in Sharjah for almost four years. During this entire time, my building's fire alarm has not worked properly and those who are responsible for maintenance do not even get it repaired.
We hear of so many fire incidents these days — it's no wonder that every time the fire alarm in my building goes off, I get very scared. However, more often than not — it is a false alarm. Why does it sound if there is no fire?
Almost every week, we hear the fire alarm but everyone thinks it is just a fire drill, so they do not get worried or step out of their apartments to check.
My own mum for example, is never worried. If she is sleeping and I wake her up, she does not bother to check if the building is on fire or not. But personally, I get really worried.
That's because if the building is actually on fire, the alarm will sound — but nobody will take it seriously or bother to check. I think this is extremely dangerous and suggest that the fire alarm in every residential complex be checked at regular intervals and repaired.
I think only some people are aware of what to do in case of a fire. All residents should know how to use a fire extinguisher.
The authorities should ensure all buildings are [equipped with functioning] fire alarms and the fire extinguishers are in order. It will save fires from destroying property and so many lives.
