The glitter of the Gold Souq is not the only attraction in Deira. The tightly packed shops of the Spice Souq just outside have witnessed millions of feet over the ages.
Although there's no date to the existence of the spice market, it's said to be one of the oldest in the region. Bastakiya on the Dubai side of the creek and the Deira area including the Gold Souq, Spice Souq, the old electronics market and fresh produce market beyond the Gold Souq have been the trading hub since the settling of the region.
Colourful and aromatic
The potent floral-sandal-citrusy amalgamation that first lured the traders off the boats in the creek still linger. The rainbows stacked high outside and inside the shops will hit you next. The avid tourists and buyers don't really hear the cries of the vendors. Sacks full of reds, golds and greens are invitation enough.
These spices, herbs and dry fruits have been imported for over a century from Far East, India, Iran, Spain and exported beyond.
The eager salesman insists on a whiff of the traditional oud that perfumes the Arab walls and wardrobes while offering a bunch of angry red chillies or sweet cinnamon with his other hand. The humble henna, that has stained many a hand and foot over the ages, sits quietly besides the oud and the spices, waiting to be noticed. He will haggle with you for the prices but eventually come closer to yours.
Dying tradition
Though it's a heritage well preserved by the government, the Spice Souq is slowly being reduced to a simple tourist destination. Dubai is a city that pampers its residents and visitors. History and tradition will eventually give in to commercialisation. You may get the same spices found here in any well-known supermarket. However, a supermarket will never be able to replicate the charm, the ambience, the aromas and the colours of a traditional souq that can transport you to another time and place.
