Muscat: An Omani national was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after a pack of rabid dogs attacked him in Khasab province, the local capital of the Musandam Peninsula which is 500km from Muscat.
The man is reported to be in good health while receiving medical treatment at Khasab hospital.
Dozens of rabid dogs are still on the loose in the province and residents are pleading with authorities to act quick to get rid of the dogs.
Video footage of rabid dogs attacking two residents in Khasab has gone viral on social media platforms.
“They are everywhere here. They terrorise people over here,” Ahmad Al Shihi, a Khasab resident, told Gulf News over phone.
He said he saw with his own eyes at least 25 rabid dogs walking around in the province on Thursday.
“I have never seen such a thing in my life. The children are really scared,” he said.
Rabies in an infections viral disease that is almost always fatal.
It causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and other animals.
Early symptoms include fever and a tingling sensation at the site of the bite.
A human or animal infected with rabies can become violent and confused and can lose consciousness.
Ninety-nine percent of rabies cases in humans have been transmitted by domestic dogs, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
