Manama: A religious-political society is pushing for the enactment of a law that stipulates the death penalty for anyone guilty of insulting God or Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) or his family.
Al Asala, the exclusive expression of Salafism in Bahrain with representatives in the lower chamber, said that its move followed the decision by the Kuwaiti parliament to endorse the amendment of the penal law to impose the death penalty for whoever insulted God or Prophet Mohammad and his family.
"This is an important step to help maintain the prestige of Prophet Mohammad at a time when sick, ignorant and hateful people insult him," Al Asala said.
No Bahraini has been implicated in a controversy over insults in social networks to Prophet Mohammad, but neighbouring Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have had to deal with tweeps who posted remarks deemed disparaging.
The law passed by the Kuwaiti parliament despite opposition from liberals is now awaiting the ratification of the Emir.
