A petition demanding action against Congress President Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul under the Immoral Trafficking Act has been submitted to Kottayam District Superintendent S. Gopinath. Rahul, who was staying at a resort in Kumarakom near Kottayam with his girlfriend Juanita of Colombia.

John M. Itty, a social activist and retired professor, said in his petition that Rahul and Juanita had stayed together in the backwater lake resort for three days even though they were not married. The petitioner pointed out that the Kerala police usually arrests unmarried couples staying in hotels. Rahul was also committing the same crime but instead of taking action against him he was being given protection by the police. This was a clear violation of the principle of equality before the law, he claimed. Gopinath said his office received the complaint but no action had been taken.

The couple, along with Rahul's sister Priyanka, her husband Robert Vadra and their two children left for Bangaram Island in the Lakshadweep yesterday. "I did not see Itty. All I received was a complaint that both Rahul and his girlfriend should be charged under the law,"Gopinath said.
