Sharjah: The municipality has already started construction work on the new fish market at a cost of Dh200 million and is expected to be completed by 2012, a senior municipality official announced on Sunday.

"The project at Al Jubail aims to meet the demand of residents in the emirate and to provide them with all the necessary services required," said Sultan Abdullah Al Mualla, Director General of Sharjah Municipality.

Al Mualla told Gulf News that the new market will have 403 shops, including 162 shops that sell fish, and 123 shops selling meat, in addition to 118 shops selling fruit and vegetables.

"We have already taken into account the different kinds of goods that will be sold at the market, and the architecture from outside will be characterised by circular arches and domes above the building," Al Mualla said.

He added that the project aims to meet the needs of Sharjah's growing population, as well as the large turnout of residents who frequently visit the fish marke. "The new market will also be able to meet the demands of the fish industry, which we expect will grow rapidly soon," he said.

Al Mualla pointed out that the Technical Affairs Department at Sharjah Municipality took into account the need for better processes for cleaning and cutting the fish, as well as disposing of waste.

Al Mualla said places will be allotted for loading and unloading of goods, as well as employee parking. He added that there will be administrative offices for a mosque.

"The design of the project is characterised by a unique design which will become one of the most recognisable buildings in the emirate of Sharjah, due to its innovative architecture," Al Mualla said.
