Sharjah: Police have arrested two Nigerian men who conned residents through claiming to have magic abilities to double people's money.

"The two suspects carried out their scam in a rented apartment in Sharjah, and would use large quantities of tools, trinkets and colourful paper while pretending to double the victims' money," said a police official at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police.

"The suspects would lure victims with their claims, and had asked them to bring US dollars with them," he said.

"Police caught the suspects red-handed while they were trying to double the money. In addition to stealing from their victims, the suspects also charged them for the tools that were used in the scam," explained the police official.

During the interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had entered the country on a visit visa, and that they planned to flee after they reached their maximum target.

Police urged residents to be more vigilant against such cams, and that they should be more alert when approached by people who claim to have magic powers that can double amounts of cash.

The suspects are currently detained and will be referred to Sharjah Public Prosecution.
