Abu Dhabi:  A man who is accused of murdering another man by stabbing him 33 times told the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance that he stabbed the man in self-defence.

The defendant's lawyer argued that M.U. was innocent, since the stabbing victim had started the attack.

According to details presented at court, M.U. had been out with his friend, the alleged stabbing victim, when his friend had drawn a knife and tried to attack him.

The lawyer for the accused said M.U. tried to run away, but his friend allegedly caught up with him.

M.U. said he had then tried to wrest the knife away from his friend, and had received a cut on his palm in the process. On failing to take the knife away, M.U. reportedly tried to run away from his friend again.

When his friend caught up with M.U. a second time, M.U. said he finally managed to take the knife from his friend and stabbed him 33 times. He then took his friend, the victim, to a hospital.

The victim died four days later.

M.U.'s defence lawyer argued that his client had only attacked the stabbing victim to defend himself, and that the police report filed after the incident registered a cut on M.U.'s palm, which was proof that M.U. had not started the attack.
