Australian playwright and screenwriter Alex Broun has partnered with a Dubai theatre company to produce a play written and set in the city. Howzat, written and directed by Broun and based on themes of “love, tolerance and humanity”, will run from December 15 to 17 at The Junction in Al Serkal Avenue, Dubai.
The English comedy-drama tells the story of a Pakistani family on The Palm who find out that the wall separating them and their Indian neighbours has fallen. What follows is a story about personalities, conflict, rivalry, secrets, historic bias, association, drama and (hopefully) a resolution.
“I’m very excited to be a part of this groundbreaking project where for the first time life in modern Dubai will be portrayed on stage in a full-length play,” said Broun. “Dubai is a city the cast and I know and love, and it will be fascinating to put on stage the challenges and experiences we face on a daily basis.”
Producer Asad Raza Khan, also an accomplished actor, said the play has been a long time in the making. “For years we have been trying to take Dubai culture and arts to the next level. We had to have locally written productions and with Howzat we start this journey,” he said. “By seeing ourselves and our own lives on stage hopefully we learn something about ourselves and the people we interact with every day. Given recent events we wanted to start a movement for peace between India and Pakistan depicting how we in Dubai live together in harmony.”
Tickets for Howzat are priced at Dh100 and are available on tixbox.com.
