With Tamil film Kaaviyathalaivan in cinemas now, tabloid! caught up with actor Siddharth for a quick chat about his role. The actor, who entered the industry with Shankar’s Boys, is in an experimental mode as he emerges from his chocolate-boy image.
On... playing Kaliappa Bhagavathar
He is an orphan who finds his way into a famous travelling theatre troupe. His whole life revolves around his teacher, their art form and his best friend, Gomathi (played by Prithviraj).
On... the preparations
I have a lot of material from the time period that the film is set in. As an avid lover of both history and old cinema, I was able to gather information relevant to my performance. Vasantabalan (director) also provided me with text and visual references. Beyond this, just walking onto the set was like a time travel. Every department meticulously recreates the look and feel of the golden age of Tamil theatre.
On... Prithviraj
Prithvi is a gift. He is an amazing actor and a passionate technician. He brought so much talent and experience to the film. It really helped that we became such close friends. Also it definitely adds to the script of the film that he and I are very competitive in real life too, just like the characters we play on screen.
On... working with Vasantabalan
I will never forget the day Balan met me over two years ago to be a part of this film. He is a pure, honest and extremely passionate filmmaker. I’m proud to be part of his vision. I also take great pride in the fact that he and I are friends. He really excited me as an actor and as an intellectual. Kaaviyathalaivan takes his already impressive filmography to the next level. This country could do with a few more craftsmen like Vasantabalan.
