Sana’a: At least five civilians have been killed and 17 hurt in continuing clashes between two tribes in Anis district, Thamar province, over the possession of an archaeological stone, government-run Al Thura reported on Tuesday.
Each tribe claims the ownership of an ancient engraved stone found in the area. The paper said that local security force and tribal mediators failed to convince the two warring tribes to cease fighting. The clashes have caused massive damage to property and the fighting is flaring up.
Meanwhile, a missile killed two Al Qaida militants in a desert area between provinces of Hadramout, Mareb, and Shawba, Yemen’s ministry of defence said on Tuesday night.
The ministry’s website reported that the militants were inside a car loaded with highly-explosive materials and the strike destroyed the vehicle and caused a big explosion. The website didn’t say whether a US drone or a Yemeni plane carried out the attack.
Al Qaida in Yemen was forced to relinquish its stronghold in the south in June and most of its members hid in many cities and mountainous and desert places. US drone and army airplanes have frequently struck vehicles carrying Al Qaida militants.
