Karachi: The Sindh government has announced that its women-only Pink bus service will be launched in Hyderabad, the 2nd largest city of the province, on February 18.

Earlier this month, the Pink bus service was introduced in Karachi that became the first-ever intra-city public transport facility in Pakistan with female hostesses.

Briefing media persons after chairing a meeting on new transport initiatives in the province, Sindh Transport Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, said that the Pink bus service would start its operations on two more routes in Karachi from February 20.

He said the number of buses on the first route of the Pink bus service in Karachi, from Model Colony to Merewether Tower, would be increased by the provincial authorities.

He said the new People’s bus service of the Sindh government would be introduced in Sukkur city on February 17. Sukkur will become the fourth city in Sindh after Karachi, Hyderabad, and Larkana, where the People’s bus service will be introduced. The fleet of the facility comprises brand new fully air-conditioned large buses with automated doors imported from China.

Memon told journalists that a new consignment of electric buses had reached Karachi Port as the environment-friendly commuter service would soon be launched on more routes in the city.

He mentioned that electric buses whose service had already been launched for the first time in Pakistan in Karachi didn’t cause any form of environmental pollution.

He said the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, had held talks with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the expansion of the People’s Bus Service so that the commuters in every urban centre of the province would get the modern bus facility.

He informed media persons that all these initiatives of the provincial government fully reflected the vision of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party to facilitate people from middle and lower-income groups whose survival had become difficult due to record inflation in the country.

Recently, the officials of ADB assured the CM to provide financial assistance to the provincial government for procuring more electric buses for residents of Karachi.
