Karachi: Reminiscent of the era of Mughal emperors, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has inaugurated a bell outside the main gate of the Governor House for letting the concerned citizens lodge their complaints of urgent nature.

The bell has been installed outside gate No 1 of the sprawling Sindh Governor House as the same entrance is used by the Governor himself and other dignitaries who come to the place to meet him.

The citizens faced with any emergency could ring the bell every any day from midnight till 8am as officials present there would immediately register the complaint and initiate action for its resolution.

The Governor said that the bell was installed to fulfill his promise that the doors of the Governor House would always remain open to the concerned citizens seeking resolution of their pressing issues ignored by the other officials in Karachi.

In accordance with the same vision a large number of people visited the Governor House every day for an Iftar meal during Ramadan as they also submitted to him their complaints on various issues in writing.

Tessori told the journalists that the bell would emerge as the symbol of hope for people facing injustice, while the same bell would serve as a sign of danger for the officials who didn’t provide immediate assistance to the aggrieved citizens.

“As the bell becomes popular among the masses I hope that the day would soon come when any citizen not getting emergency assistance from any official would warn him that he would go to the Governor House for seeking redressal,” said Tessori.

In addition to the bell, a cell centre with contact number “1366” has been established at the Governor House for receiving complaints from the public.

A spokesman for the Governor House said that on the first night after the bell became functional a total of 21 aggrieved persons used it for getting help for the resolution of their complaints. Tessori personally met the complainants while inviting them inside the Governor House. In one case he telephoned the in-charge official of a police station for helping an aggrieved citizen in getting registered a criminal case.

In another case involving the demolition of a wedding hall in Karachi, the Governor informed its owners that he could only help if their business had been illegally demolished by the officials.
