Dubai: A defamation case was filed against Vinta Nanda, the writer who had accused actor Alok Nath of sexual assault.

According to Indian media reports, Nath’s wife filed the case in Mumbai’s Andheri Court.

Alok Nath became one of the top trends on Twitter once again after the news broke. Last week, he was trending on Twitter because of Nanda posting her #MeToo story on Facebook.

Some tweeps were surprised by the fact that his wife filed the defamation case, while others were happy that this would bring some order to the current environment of accusations on social media.

Tweep @p_kulkarni_17 wrote: “Irrespective of whether a story lacks credibility or not, we should always hear both sides of the story and only then reach a conclusion. And remember, burden of proof is always on the accuser, that’s the law of our land and constitution. #metoo.”

Writing on Facebook, Nityananda Misra, said: “A welcome step, these battles are best fought legally and not on Twitter where the rule these days seems to be “No account, no ledger, what the accuser says is correct”.

Another Twitter user @TheAmitLakhani added: “If people think that maming-shaming via #MeToo and the social media platforms would deliver justice, they are completely disregarding the law and justice system in our country. Also taking advantage of the fact that defamation laws are extremely weak in India.”

However, Nanda had a lot of support online, with tweeps happy she would be able to prove her case in the court of law.

@raghunathtk wrote: “Oh! Classic case of victim becomes hounded by defamation. The judges do read #MeToo [accounts] and you can’t fool them. Hope they straight away jail him.”

Another Twitter user @Vishala56598275 added: Truth always wins.

Many of Alok Nath’s co-stars including Sandhya Mridul, Himani Shivpuri and Renuka Shahane have shared their personal stories with Nath, talking about the harrassment women faced.
