A Dh450 million space age theme park will open its doors to the public for the first time on Eid.
The Stargate attraction at gate four in Za'abeel Park promises a fun-packed experience within themed zones. People can learn to ice skate, watch a 3-D movie, race go-karts or even go on a rollercoaster.
It was decided to open the 400,000-square-foot site early, ahead of the official launch in November, to allow families to enjoy the extended weekend holiday. There is no entry fee, but to use the facilities and go on rides, a Dh2 smart card needs to be purchased. The card can be recharged with cash. There are no discounts for children. The charges are yet to be announced, but some attractions, including 3-D cinemas and ice skating, will cost Dh25 each.
Different domes
Stargate is split into five themed domes — Earth, UFO, Lunar, Saturn and Mars — and a pyramid-styled food court.
The structure is designed to resemble the interior of a spacecraft with aerial walkways.
Around 70 per cent of the Space Mall is now filled with shops and restaurants. The first floor is packed with different kinds of computer games that encourage youngsters to be active.
An important aspect of the site is the encouragement of learning. The officials are expecting a large uptake from schools. Special sections have been set aside where children as young as three can draw, paint and listen to stories.
Around 12 staff members will be on hand to teach children about subjects as varied as physics and the environment in special classes.
Abdullah Bin Odah Al Gobain, Chief Executive of Stargate developer Osus, said: “Stargate is a one-of-a-kind interactive learning destination that fuels children's hunger to explore, while providing a safe and controlled environment. We are thrilled to host our very first guests this Eid.''
