The Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co (Takreer) is close to finalising agreements with Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) and the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Co (Transco) to supply power to Adwea through the Transco grids.
Takreer is expected to provide Adwea with 300 megawatts of electricity. Moreover, the interconnecting of the grid in Abu Dhabi, funded by Takreer, is expected to be completed by within weeks.
"The grid project is a step in the right direction as it will serve the purpose of unifying the UAE grid and later connecting it to the GCC electricity grid," Takreer said yesterday.
This reflects international efforts to unify power grids worldwide, it added. Takreer's core business is oil refining, but the company is also involved in the production and supply of electric power from its General Utilities Plant (GUP) in Ruwais to industries and the surrounding community.
"The project will bring significant benefits to the local economy. It will not only minimise the chances of any power failures in future but will also enhance the capacity of the unified grid," Takreer said.
Takreer's profit improvement programme started in March after UK consultancy KBC Technologies won the contract as knowledge provider for the programme. Completion is set for next January.
A management delegation from Takreer recently visited Kuwait National Petroleum Co to study the implementation process and lessons learnt from the Kuwaiti company's profit improvement programme.
