Residents opt for other gifts as gold soars
But there are some who feel a gift made from the precious metal is part of Eid celebrations
Abu Dhabi: Many residents in the UAE have limited their jewellery purchases and opted for other gifts during Eid Al Adha.
"This year, the price of gold has increased greatly. That has discouraged people from buying gold… even throughout the week leading up to Eid Al Adha, we haven't sold a lot of items for customers wishing to give them as presents," Ali Al Hashimi, Deputy Manager, Al Hashimi Jewellery, said.
However, some feel gold is an essential, and perhaps even a traditional, part of celebrating Eid Al Adha.
"I think that even though the prices of gold are high, people are still buying [items] to give as presents. Compared to giving branded gifts, gold is much more valuable," Eman Al Fares, a Jordanian expatriate, explained.
