Dubai: One person was killed and 13 people were injured after a partial collapse of the Indian pavilion at the Global Village on Saturday.
Police said an Arab woman was killed when a wooden piece from the Indian pavilion gates fell on her.
The injured victims sustained light to moderate injuries and were hospitalised.
Global Village was closed on Sunday after the incident.
According to a statement by Saeed Ali Bin Redha, CEO of the Global Village: "Global Village will not open today (Sunday), February 28, 2010, due to the expected bad weather.
"Regrettably, we also confirm that an incident occurred on Saturday evening due to the extreme and unexpected weather conditions, when an element of the Indian pavilion entrance fell. As a result of this accident, 14 people were taken to hospital by ambulance where one of the injured later died. The management of Global Village extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and its sympathy to the injured and their families and remains available to assist them."
"Global Village management is working closely with Dubai police and other concerned authorities to assist them with their investigations."
170 road accidents
The rain on Saturday also caused traffic delays in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah due to low visibility and clustered waters on the roads.
The Dubai Police's Operations Room reported 170 road accidents during the first hours of the heavy rains that lashed the country on Saturday night.
Colonel Omar Al Shamsi, Director of Dubai Police's Command and Control Room, said there were 21 serious road accidents, 16 moderate accidents and 133 minor accidents. Colonel Al Shamsi said the control room also received 3,415 phone calls.
