Dubai:
Around 50 municipal workers will be selected today (Monday) to participate in a series of events hosted in recognition of their outstanding contribution in the community.
The celebrations include a dinner tonight in the workers’ honour, and will be followed by a series of activities leading up to the date of accession — January 4 — of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Eng Hussain Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, explained that the honouring ceremony and events were organised based on the directives of Shaikh Mohammad, in a ‘Thank You’ campaign to reward employees of various municipal departments that offer services to the public, including gardeners, rubbish collectors, public transport vehicle drivers, and cleaners, among others.
The Public Parks and Horticulture Department alone has a workforce of 2,000 in different technical positions and has an additional workforce of 3,000 that is outsourced by various companies. The Waste Management Department employs 2,600 rubbish collectors.
“The selected group of workers will have a dinner in their honour and will be treated to avisit to Burj Khalifa and Global Village. A cricket tournament will also be organised. A number of events will be organised from today untilJanuary 4 , while they will also be rewarded with gifts for their hard efforts in the vital role they play in the community,” said Lootah.
“The directive of Shaikh Mohammad is a generous gesture as it [reminds us all] as to how important this group of community members are, and we have to appreciate their valuable services who have worked hard to keep a clean environment for all of us and achieve a better quality of life,” he stressed.
“This significant category play an important role in our lives and by following the example [of Shaikh Mohammad], we should all appreciate the efforts [of such workers],” Lootah added.
