2.20pm 'We want a knowledge-based economy'

“People might wonder what the secret behind the success of the UAE is. We are a Muslim State and our identity is the source of our success,” said Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his address at the Government Summit in Dubai.

“Yes, we come from a desert but with the effort of its people, the UAE was able to advance its people, infrastructure, and society,” he added

Excerpts from his speech:
The human being is the most valued source of culture. Man is the essence of every civilised process.

When the UAE was established 50% of men and 30% of women could write and read. Now 90% of them can read and write.

The UAE has 2200 facilities that provide state-of-the art health care.

Women are a big part of the UAE's success.

Oil represents les than third of the country's GDP . Our economy is one of the most important economic hubs in the region and emerging economies.

The UAE has become a hub for airlines and connections and intentional hub for communication. It is the fastest growing economy, with regulations that protect its consumers.

When we talk about industry we have to focus on one issue, which is that the UAE needs to be a knowledge based economy.

We are investing in the energy for the future. We want to build a future like we are building the present. The solar energy plant will be launched in 2015.

There are Emiratis working all around the world. We are also exporting our talents.

12.37pm Watson to predict traffic, floods, and sickness

A super computer named Watson could be the next technological breakthrough as its capabilities go as far as helping to predict the future and save lives by analyzing big data.

Created by IBM, Watson, which is fed with a vast amount of information and data can analyse and rapidly answer questions through analytics, explained Bernard Meyerson, Vice-president of innovation at the second day of the Dubai Government Summit.

Watson is not only a question-answer tool, but can predict a flood, traffic jams, and even look at a patient’s data to predict when they will fall sick.

Pointing out that 90 per cent of the data in the world did not exist two years ago, Meyerson explained that big data is so large that we no longer can deal with.

“With big data we can predict the future that could help us save lives, avoid traffic ahead of time. Watson has the ability to make big-data information consumable” he said.

Used by several hospitals in the US to analyze cases of healthcare, Watson showed its ability to analyze 3500 text books from cover to cover and 4000 other data sets in 17 seconds in one particular case.

The cognitive system, which can customize itself to your behavior includes language processing, hypothesis generation and evaluation, and evidence-based learning, said Meyerson.

“Information technology should be taken for granted. It should be accessible and intelligent. We should use technology for the betterment of people and the betterment of society,” he said.
