President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, yesterday issued in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Decree No 21 of the year 2005 related to the administration of waste materials in the emirate.

This shall be affected following its publication in the official gazette.

According to the decree, the Abu Dhabi Environmental Authority shall cater to bettering the administration of waste materials in the emirate by providing solutions for the treatment of waste materials and by setting priorities and appropriate methods for getting rid of waste, in collaboration with concerned bodies.

The law which comprises eight chapters and twelve articles stipulated the obligations of Abu Dhabi Environmental Authority in the context of a variety of environmental activities: permits for installations, permits for providers of environmental services and permits for operators in the collection, storing, recycling and treatment of waste materials.

The law stipulated that governmental bodies shall conduct studies of their sectors' needs in order to adopt the best methods and technologies for carrying out the work, and to provide suitable and sufficient installations for storing, treating and disposing of waste materials through their own efforts or through the assistance of the private sector.

They shall also provide the organisational structures and the necessary financial capabilities to the purpose of a proper administration of waste.

The law detailed the control, inspection and punishment measures to ensure the installations concerned were committed to the terms which regulated operations in the administration of waste in the emirate.
