Abu Dhabi: Two new institutions in the emirate of Abu Dhabi will open to accommodate only girls, officials have said.

While there is not an overwhelming demand for girls-only schools, some communities have indicated a preference for them, said Tareq Al Ameri, business development manager at education sector regulator, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec).

“Other than that, the general rule is that classes be segregated for girls and boys in private schools from Grade 5 onwards, and this seems to suit the needs of most parents,” he explained.

As reported by Gulf News last November, the first of the new girls-only schools is opening in September 2016 in the capital’s Al Nahyan Camp area. Unofficially known as Al Mamoura School, it will enrol both boys and girls until Grade 6, and be exclusive to girls for its secondary classes. The school will be operated by Aldar Academies, the educational wing of master developer Aldar. Annual fees at the institution are expected to exceed Dh40,000, Aldar officials said earlier.

Liwa International School for Girls is also set to open in Al Ain. It will be operated by the Liwa family of schools, and offer the American curriculum. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the school will accept admissions from kindergarten to Grade 8.

Other than these new facilities, some existing schools in the capital also have separate branches or buildings exclusive to girls, such as Al Nahda National Schools’ girls branch, and Grades 5 upwards at Al Shohub Private School.
