The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appointed a Bahraini woman as its representative in Iraq to head the international body's team in rebuilding Iraq's health services, the Bahraini news agency reported, BNA, reported yesterday.

Naima Al Gaseer will hold the WHO's highest post in Iraq, with the diplomatic status of an ambassador, BNA said.

Dr Naima, currently working at WHO headquarters in Geneva as a senior scientist for the organisation's nursing section, "will spearhead the multinational team which is trying to get Iraq's hospitals, clinics and public health services back on their feet," a statement carried by BNA said.

It is a huge task requiring massive expenditure on buildings, equipment and training of personnel, she was quoted as saying. "This is an honour for my country," she said.

She said it will be her task to bring together and mobilise teams from the United Nations, the United States, Europe in addition to Iraqis. "She may also be calling on Bahraini doctors to help," said BNA.

Dr Naima holds a PhD in nursing science from the University of Illinois. She has been working for the World Health Organisation since 1996.
