Be part of the solution

This report made me very sad (“New York imam, associate shot dead outside mosque”, Gulf News, August 15). May the imam rest in peace. And those people who are sad, but turn a blind eye towards the protection of minorities in theirr own countries while pouncing at the US for every small thing that happens there, then sadly you are part of the problem. To be a part of the solution, you need to support all minority with equal rights and freedom as well as no differentiation between terrorists. There is nothing like “good terrorists” or “bad terrorists”. Hate crime can stop with us as it starts with us as people, too.

Speak up

As a non-Muslim, I condemn any such act of violence or terrorism, regardless of the victim’s race or religion. We cannot make the world a better place if we only decide to speak up when people of our own race or religion are killed. I hope everyone realises this.

Ignorance prevails

This was a hate crime. It seems like the US has an array of people who are ignorant and are mongering hate. They are not only targeting Muslims.

Questioning safety

What a shameful act in the US, which is supposed to be a relatively peaceful country. It seems that even they cannot stop terrorism. This is a very shameful incident and makes one question the safety or security of a common man or woman in the US.

Let them speak

I think it is best to get the opinions of the families, relatives and friends of the victims on the issue of burying the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Heroes Cemetery (“Army to give military honours to dictator Marcos, spokesman says”, Gulf News, August 14). If they say that they are ready to move on, so be it. It is easy for us to say that we will allow his burial because he was a former president, but have we thought of the feelings of the victims? They should have the last say on this matter, not us, who never knew anything of how deep the wounds the past made on them.

It is right

Ferdinand Marcos deserves to be buried at the Heroes Cemetery. It would be right according to the Philippines Constitution, too. Once a person is a president or a war veteran, he can be buried there and former president Marcos was both.

A better nation

We can’t live in the past. Nothing will happen if we don’t forget. Nowadays, I can feel the change with the new Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and his promises during his campaign period. Let us hold on and unite together for a better Philippines.

Move on

I agree with the decision to bury Ferdinand Marcos at the Heroes Cemetery as he was a soldier, too. It’s right for him to be buried there. It shouldn’t be made into an issue. The past is in the past, we need to move on. If we remain stuck in the past, it will ruin the present.

They won’t understand

Those who did not experience the martial law and did not know what Ferdinand Marcos did, will not understand what the victims felt. They need to run a search on the internet for the truth. They should not just believe what they read on social media. Records show that he is not a hero. It is all fake. And it’s on the record by many investigating bodies. But, his supporters will just bully you, because the truth hurts.

The best time

Yes, this decision was long overdue. In my opinion, Ferdinand Marcos was great for our country, Philippines, when comparing him to other presidents before and after him. About the martial law, it was the best time the Philippines ever had. Only criminals were not happy with it, because it was intended for them. But, for the law-abiding citizens, it was the safest time.

Not a hero

Ferdinand Marcos’ supporters are not claiming that the former president should be known and declared a ‘hero’. But, we believe that he must be buried at the Heroes Cemetery for being a president of the Philippines and a soldier.

His own trap

In the Philippines, the extra judicial killing will get wider support and appreciation in the initial days, because everything will be at its best in the beginning (“Philippines: Anti-crime drive showing results”, Gulf News, August 15). The implementation of law and order bypassing the judiciary eventually will be detrimental to the interest of the general public and the wrath will turn against the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte himself. With this innovative idea, he says to the world that he doesn’t believe in the judiciary and bureaucracy any more. He should understand one thing that the biggest enemy is not drugs, but corruption. His great mistake is that he trusts and assigns the job of discretion and killing to the police. Can he guarantee that the police is corruption free and trustworthy? It seems like Duterte is making his own trap.

Focus on your posture

I too have faced issues to do with poor postures (“Protect your health: The dos and don’ts of proper posture”, Gulf News, August 14). Earlier, with active participation in sports like football, I was able to balance out my physical activities. However, ever since I have let go of my post-work hours routine, poor posture has affected me, especially my back. I feel that active participation in some sort of activity or sport, consciously working on our posture while at work and also taking short breaks in the office, by taking a quick walk, will help out in rectifying and balancing poor posture and other physical health issues.

Take care of your health

Life has taken all of us from being with Nature to being with the world. The more we stay away from Nature, the more we damage the gift of Nature and the life that runs in all of us. Spine is the life line of our bodies and is in alignment with the earth’s axis. It seems that we don’t understand the value of the spine and hence we care less for it. We are so obsessed with taking care of our skin, body, beauty and hair, but very rarely do we focus our attention on our spine. Simple methods are available to be conscious about your spine and if we take time to brush our teeth, shower our body, comb our hair and eat our food, then why shouldn’t we spend a little time to be mindful of our spine, too? We are all struggling to achieve more and ignore the very basis of life, our health.

Pay more attention

This report was an interesting read. Spending all day sitting at work and a few extra hours sitting in my car, I realise that I am not being careful about my back. During the day, I suffer from back aches and by the time I reach home it is almost unbearable. I understand that I need to focus more on my posture, especially while I’m sitting. I’m sure if I made a little bit of an effort, I would feel relief immediately. I just wish there was someone to guide me correctly.
