Dubai: If you have raked up a lot of fines while driving in Dubai, you may find it hard to pay off a big amount through a single payment. Dubai Police offers motorists the option to pay their traffic fines in interest-free installments, by breaking them down into three, six, or 12 month plans. If you choose to pay through cheques, you can even break it up over a 24-month installment plan.

So, what is the fine installment service and how can you avail of this offer? Living in UAE of gulfnews.com spoke with Captain Hussain AlAbdouli, Head of fine collection section at Dubai Police, who said that Dubai Police offers two types of installment plans against traffic fines – an installment plan by cheques or credit cards.

1. Installment plan by cheques

Speaking about the installment plan by cheques, Captain AlAbdouli said: “To apply for this service the customer should visit Dubai Police, General Department of Traffic.”

He also shared the following terms and conditions that need to be fulfilled if you would like to apply for the installment plan by cheque:

- Accumulated fines should be above Dh5,000 for individuals and above Dh20,000 for companies.

- An upfront payment of 25 per cent is required.

- The installment should not exceed 24 months.

- A security cheque amounting to the principal amount must be submitted as a guarantee.

Once you visit the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police (Location), you can make the request for the installment plan and submit the necessary cheques.

When using the option for paying the fine in installment by cheques, the customer is not allowed to sell or transfer ownership of a vehicle until all payments have been made.

2. Installment plan by credit card

If you wish to avail of the instalment plan through you credit card, you can complete the procedure online – either through the Dubai Police website or through the Dubai Police smartphone application, which is available for both Android and Apple devices.

List of banks that are approved for credit card installments are:

- Emirates NBD

- Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank

- Commercial Bank International

- First Abu Dhabi Bank

- Emirates Islamic

- Dubai Islamic Bank

- Standard Chartered Bank

- Commercial Bank of Dubai

- Finance House

- This service is valid for traffic fines over Dh500 except for Emirates NBD, where the traffic fines should exceed Dh1,000.

To avail the service, you need to first make the payment of the fines through your credit card and then apply for the installment service.

Step 1: Pay your traffic fine through the website or app

You can pay the fine by visiting: https://www.dubaipolice.gov.ae/wps/portal/websps/webspsserviceslist/webspsfinesenquiry or by using the Dubai Police app and selecting ‘Traffic fines payment’

Step 2: Click on access service

Once you select the service, you will need to provide details of your number plate or T.C. No.. You will receive a list of all the violations that have been recorded under the particular traffic file number or vehicle.

Step 3: Make the payment through credit card

After searching for fines by Traffic File Number, License Number, Plate number or the Fine Number, you need to make the payment through a credit card issued by one of the banks listed above.

Once the payment is made, you will receive a transaction reference number on the website or app, as well as through an SMS on your registered mobile number, which you will need to request for the instalment plan.

Step 4: Apply for installment plan

Visit the installment plan service online here: https://www.dubaipolice.gov.ae/wps/portal/home/services/individualservicescontent/installmentServiceDetails or on the Dubai Police app. You will be asked for a transaction number. This is the transaction reference number that you received in the previous step. Enter the transaction number, name of your bank, the credit card number, installment amount and installment period. You can then submit the request for the installment plan.

Once the request has been received by Dubai Police, you will receive an acknowledgement message.

How many installments can I distribute the fine in?

According to Captain AlAbdouli, for cheques, you can split the payment into 24 installments. For credit cards, the payment can be made in 12 installments.

"When using the option for paying the fine in installment by cheques, the customer is not allowed to sell or transfer ownership of a vehicle until all payments have been made,” he said.
