Abu Dhabi: Syrian National Council (SNC) called on Saturday the international community to turn their words into deeds as the conditions in Syria are aggravating amidst massacres and heavy death toll.
Abdul Basit Sida , SNC chairman, told the Gulf News that it is now the right time to act militarily to stop bloodshed and massacres, particularly in Aleppo.
“We have arranged with Arabs and Friends of Syria to refer the issue to the General Assembly of the UN as the road is blocked at the Security Council. There will also be a meeting in Morocco in September,” remarked Sida.
“There should be a world decision to apply the 7th chapter of Charter of UN,” said Sida.
Chapter 7 of the UN Charter allows the Council to "determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and to take military and nonmilitary action to "restore international peace and security".
“The Syrian regime is using heavy weapons, armoured vehicles and heavy artillery as well as Mig 21 and 23 to bombard Aleppo,” he complained.
“If the international community cannot act, they should support the opposition with anti-tanks missiles and anti-aircraft rockets,” requested Sida.
“We seek international supporters to arm our uprising against the regime. We also need financial aid. Every day month we need US$145 million to distribute on the rebels and to extend relief on our people in Syria who are suffering unrest,” said Sida.
Sida added: “It is very hard to determine a time framework for the fall of the regime because of many factors that are interconnected together. Yet, the influence of the regime is declining, especially in major cities such as Damascus and Aleppo.
Sida called on both Russia and China to take action to calm the situation in Syria.
“Syrians are killed by Russian guns. The number of the dead increased after Annan plan was released. Today’s death toll reached 20,000,” Sida added.
On an interim government to be based on the opposition, Sida said: “The interim government should be represented by the opposition groups in Syria. In the past we were talking about having the vice president as part of the transition government; however, now after the failure of Anan’s plan, we will not accept any person from the regime to be in the government.”
Sida pointed that he was in touch with Arab League and United Nations joint special envoy for Syria Kofi Annan and their last negotiation was on July 14.
Sida complained that the Syrian government did not function, and that the SNC welcome all those who defected and encourages those who are reluctant to do the same in order to be with the Syrian people in their demands and rights.
Sida confirmed that Syrian people would continue their battle against the regime and they would not return from their way.
For his part, Sameer Nashar said that the clashes in Syria are not fair.
“The Syrian army is equipped with heavy arms and the rebels are using their
conventional weapons,” Nashar complained.
“Therefore, if the situation continues in Aleppp, we hope that there will be airstrikes from the Turkish territory,” Nashar said.
Reports from Syria of continuing violence, arbitrary detention, and torture continued to appear.
Talks with Shaikh Abdullah
Sida said that his talks with UAE Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed focused on financial and technical support.
“We have discussed financial and technical support for the Syrian opposition.
Nashar called on the UAE and other government to provide the rebels with weapons to proceed further with their revolution," he said.
