Riyadh: A Saudi Arabian woman has posted a video on YouTube driving a car, to mark International Women's Day.

Women are prohibited from driving vehicles in Saudi Arabia, in accordance with Saudi Arabian law.

Wajeha Al Huwaider, a prominent Saudi Arabian activist, who was arrested by police in 2006 for organizing a women's rights protest, talks throughout the video about the need for women to be able to drive in Saudi Arabia.

She says female drivers are already common in rural parts and says she hopes to see women driving in the country's towns and cities.

Al Huwaider is also a well-known journalist and has worked for the Arabic language daily Al-Watan and English language daily Arab News.

Following her arrest in 2006, she was reportedly forced to sign a statement agreeing to stop all activist activity and was banned from travelling outside Saudi Arabia. The ban was later lifted.
