Manama: In a rare case, a 38-year-old mother who has been brain dead for four months has given birth to a baby boy in Al Khobar in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

According to Sa'ad Specialist Hospital, the baby boy was delivered 28 weeks and two days after conception and is in good condition.

"The mother was transferred to the hospital more than four months ago in a terrible state," Dr Samer Qarah, chief medical officer at Sa'ad Specialist Hospital, said. "She was 11 weeks pregnant and was artificially fed and was given all necessary antibiotics," he said, quoted by Sabq news portal on Monday.

However, when the mother was brain dead, the medical team worked on preserving the baby's life in compliance with religious and medical ethics.

But after 28 weeks, the team of doctors decided to perform a caesarean due to the worsening of the baby's condition.

All post-natal tests did not reveal any abnormality.
