Muscat: A six-member gang, accused of attempting to circulate fake currency notes in Oman, has been busted by the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

The Gulf national, who was part of the gang, arrived in Oman with a unusually large amount of currencies, which is out of circulation, from a GCC state.

The ROP refrained from naming the country whose out of circulation currency was brought to Oman but the pictures released suggested that they could be Bahraini notes.

A gang member, who is a citizen of a GCC state, approached five citizens and connived them to sell the fake currency at less than the nominal value.

On a tip off, the ROP tailed the gang as they moved around in different districts of Muscat, including Mawalah, which has the country’s biggest wholesale vegetable market and a large number of overseas traders come there.

As the gang members were delivering the fake currencies to potential buyers, ROP swooped on them and arrested them. When the accused were caught, they were in possession of 16,000 Omani riyals worth of fake currencies.

The case is now being investigated by the public prosecution before being brought to the court.
