Manila: Suspected communist rebels burned a fuel tank owned by a semi-government company, in the southern Philippines, a radio report said.

Ten armed men who introduced themselves as members of the New Peoples Army (NPA), flagged down a fuel tanker owned by patron, at the national highway of Adtuyon Pangantucan village in Bukidnon, Col. Leopoldo Galon, spokesman of the Eastern Midnanao Command, told Radyo Inquirer.

The tanker came from Cagayan de Oro and was bound for Kanlilangan, Bukidnon, said Galon.

Protection money

The NPA, the armed wing of the 45-year old Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), has been demanding payment of protection money from companies that operate in the provinces.

The Philippine government and the communist National Democratic Front (NDF) have been holding peace talks since 1992.

They have signed initial political agreements since then, but they have not yet inked a ceasefire accord.
