Ras Al Khaimah: A Filipina sustained serious injuries when she was hit by a motorcyclist performing stunts on Al Qawasim Corniche on Sunday.

A senior police officer at the Traffic and Licensing Department said that the 20-year-old victim was crossing the street when a 19-year-old Emirati motorcyclist knocked her down.

The motorcycle rider sustained moderate injuries. Both were taken to Saqr Hospital.

With the start of the mid-year vacation, the corniche has become a stage for motorcycle riders who perform stunts and race. The Traffic and Licensing Department has been urged to either implement stricter measures or ban motorcycles on the corniche — a haven for families during the winter.

Families who use the corniche say motorcycles create deafening sounds when their riders perform stunts. It also becomes difficult for authorities to control the activities there as the riders quickly vanish. The families said it was only a matter of time before an accident happened.

A senior officer at the Traffic and Licensing Department said that Al Qawasim Corniche has been a key target zone in the emirate for traffic inspection campaigns. The officer said that it is illegal to ban licensed and legitimate vehicles from using a particular area.
