Abu Dhabi: Commuting between emirates to complete essential traffic services may soon become a thing of the past, once the much awaited unified traffic system is implemented by the authorities.

The project, to unify traffic departments across all seven emirates, launched four years ago has neared completion, Interior ministry officials announced yesterday. Once the system is completed a wide range of services can be completed by the customers with ease.

The interior ministry is all set to implement the system now that the merging of the individual databases of the traffic departments in each emirate with the federal traffic system has been successfully completed.

However, officials did not specify a timeline as to from when residents will be able to benefit from the system.

The final merger of database was between the ministry and Dubai’s Road Transport Authority (RTA), Colonel Anwar Al Mulla, head of the information technology and communications department of Abu Dhabi police said.

The move is in line with the ministry’s efforts to improve customer satisfaction, he said.

Lieutenant Mohammed Darwish Balooki, the project development manager said that unified system holds information on all traffic files, driver’s licenses, vehicles and traffic violations.

The system will also allow the public to access several services electronically. It is linked to insurance companies as well, he said.
