Abu Dhabi: Intelligent transport systems that inform motorists about traffic congestion and availability of parking ahead of their journey could help encourage use of public transportation, a researcher said on Monday.

At present, the main uses of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) include use on roads or in front of parking lots to inform drivers about upcoming diversion and road blocks or about availability of parking spaces.

However, if the uses of such systems are expanded to inform drivers about these issues before they embark on their journey, then public transportation could also benefit from increased usage, said Mohammad Esmail, a UK-based architect and researcher. He was presenting a paper entitled "Use of ITS in urban developments" at the World Renewable Energy Congress that began on Sunday.

ITS consists of a wide range of telecommunication systems which are integrated into road infrastructure or vehicles to create a safer and more efficient transport network. The electronic signboards used by the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai to communicate important messages to drivers and the Salik electronic toll collection gate are examples of ITS.

"ITS could help influence public behaviour in a positive way, but only if they are informed at the right time — before they commence a journey".

"Installing transport information screens at urban developments could be the answer," he said, based on a study he prepared.

Through such screens, the public would be able to access vital information such as weather updates, congestion, parking etc. It should be free of cost, accessible to all and simple to use, Esmail added.

For example, individuals may switch from use of their private vehicles to public transport if they know that their usual travel route is severely congested, if there is no or limited available parking at their destination; and if an efficient and cost-effective alternative is available by public transport.

Although this information is available to the public now through the electronic media, it is not available to all.

How it works: Data on driving

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can inform motorists in advance about :

- Road conditions or accidents

- Congestion

- Weather conditions

- Public transport arrival / departure times

- Public transport delays

-  Parking availability
