Abu Dhabi: Federal National Council Speaker Mohammad Ahmad Al Murr said the establishment of the FNC was not only a historic moment, but it was also a wise, viable political decision to usher in the development of federal institutions and the nation-building process.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the FNC, Al Murr said: "With advent of the anniversary of the FNC on February 12, the FNC will turn 40 years old — the years [were] characterised by continuous parliamentary work and with the support and vision of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan."
He said the FNC, which was set up in 1972 as one of the five federal authorities stated in the UAE constitution, has kept pace with development.
Al Murr added that the FNC was keen to respond to the vision of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the national programme based on the Shura Principle, participation of Emiratis and activation of the FNC's role to upgrade the national work and support the UAE policy locally and abroad.
He said the FNC was also keen to propose and discuss ways to provide good living conditions for citizens and to be a genuine resource for the nation and its future.
He said the FNC shoulders a greater and active role in public life in the country, and has been discharging its legislative and control functions in accordance with its jurisdiction.
Al Murr added that the FNC has pledged to implement the vision of the UAE President to meet the endeavours of the UAE people.
